Top-10 for De Dycker in Brazilian GP

Due to heavy rainfall on Saturday night the traditional morning warmup was binned to limit damage to the severly tortured track. It was feared that the Brazilian Grand Prix would be contested over one moto. However, the tropic downpour stopped and business continued as usual! Still the world best MX1 riders were in for a rough ride at Beto Carrero, where the fifth round of the FIM MX1 Motocross World Championship took place. Red Bull-KTM rider Ken De Dycker experienced a disappointing GP. After a 6th and 13th place during Ken found himself ninth overall, equal on points with Evgeny Bobryshev and Shaun Simpson. As a result De Dycker has dropped to fifth in provisional standings.

Despite a strong fourth time in the pre-qualification session the qualifying race on Saturday afternoon itself did not go according to plan for the multiple GP winner. Together with fellow countryman Kevin Strijbos, De Dycker hit the deck in the first corner. From the penultimate position Ken brilliantly bounced back to come home in eighth tplace. Unfortunately, the crash at the start of the qualifying race was a bad omen. Actually Keeno suffered another first corner crash in the opening moto. By now the sticky red earth of the spectacular Beto Carrero track had turned into a treacherous quagmire with seemingly endless ruts. Even though the speeds were much lower than expected and the jumps were less high, the more than 22,000 cheering fans happily witnessed the thrills and spills! After his crash Ken had his work cut out, but the lanky Belgian proved his ability as a mud rider. Given the circumstances he managed a fine sixth position behind eventual rostrum finisher Strijbos.

Continueing the bad luck pattern in the final moto of the weekend De Dycker had an awfully bad start. The KTM SX-F 450 mounted rider was dead last going into the first corner. Ken gained some positions quickly but almost inevitably, given the slippery state of the circuit, he sampled the Brazilian soil once more. The heavy bike and the demanding first moto started to take their toll. De Dycker could not find his rhythm and finished 13th. An unprecedented low for the former British MX1 champion this season because he didn’t finish outside of the top 10 up until then.

Ken De Dycker: "The theme park where the GP took place was nice ... The race itself was a huge letdown! I felt at home on the beautiful, dry track but I in the end I had some bad luck and when everything was said and done it was a bad weekend. In the qualifying race I had hurt my leg. That slowed me down on Sunday because I was lacking some muscle power something you definitely needed in Brazil. Picking up the engine out of the mud every time was gnarly, I dropped it three times in the first race and all of that literally added up for the second moto. I’m currently fifth in standings, for sure I lost some points here, but my position is still okay.”
