Rusk Charges at A2

Shock Springs, the Race Tech support riders headed to visit Angel
Stadium in Anaheim, CA for the second time this season. Killy Rusk
charged from behind on his Rockwell/FirePoliceMX.com/Race Tech supported
CRF250 to earn the best Supercross Lites finish of his young career.
Fellow Race Tech riders showed a lot of speed on the demanding track,
but tough luck would take its toll.


 


During
timed qualifying, the competitors of the AMA Supercross Series were
presented with the toughest whoop section so far this season. Many of
the unseeded Lites riders were having troubles making it through this
tricky section; however, Race Tech supported Preston Mull set the tone
early in his warmup session by blitzing the whoops before anyone else.
The track builders would tame the section throughout the night; however,
it was apparent a long set of whoops would test everyone's suspension
all night long.


 


Preston
Mull, Killy Rusk, and Teddy Maier would all qualify out of their timed
sessions into the evening program. Maier had his best qualifying effort
of the year; 12th overall in the Lites Class, despite suffering from an
illness that made him questionable to race the evening program.


 


In
450 timed qualifying, all 5 of the RT support riders breezed into the
evening program. Robert Noftz, Cody Gilmore, Michael Horban, Dustin
Pipes, and Ben Lamay showed strong inside the top 40 times.


 


During
the evening program, Killy Rusk would charge during his Lites heat from
near 15th all the way up to knock on the door of the top 5 resulting in
a direct transfer to the evening's Lites Main Event. After a first lap
crash over the triple, Teddy Maier would sacrifice valuable points and
call it a night. He'll hope to regroup and be in better health for the
final California stop on the tour in San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium this
Saturday night. Preston Mull would suffer from poor starts all night
long and fail to qualify for the main.


 


Ben
Lamay put on a great show in his heat race after banging bars in a 5
rider battle through the closing laps of his Supercross Class heat race.
Lamay would get edged out narrowly by veteran Nick Wey for the final
transfer spot. In the LCQ, Lamay would come from behind but couldn't
make it happen after a poor start in such a short race.


 


Building
confidence after qualifying for his first main event of the season,
Rockwell/FirePoliceMX.com rider Killy Rusk was ready to turn heads in
the Lites Main Event. After a tough few opening laps, Rusk found himself
outside of the top 15 with a whole field of the fastest 250f riders in
the world in front of him. Instead of being intimidated by the
competition, Rusk but his head down and began blowing past riders in the
whoops each lap. By the halfway point, Rusk found himself with a look
at the tail end of the 10.


 


Throughout
the rest of the race, Rusk would continue to charge forward after
sustaining pressure from behind from Billy Laninovich. Rusk would break
free from the riders behind him with 2 laps to go and began showing Ryan
Sipes a wheel. One last run through the whoops got Rusk up along side
the Yamaha-mounted Sipes, but Rusk was unable to make the move. Crossing
the line in 12th position, Rusk recorded his best SX Lites finish to
date.


 


Killy
Rusk and the rest of the Race Tech supported riders will look to put in
one more solid performance at the last California stop of the tour, and
the final West Coast Lites round before a long break next weekend.
