Motocross 338 – Southwick, MA
Team Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda rolled into the penultimate round of 2008 AMA Motocross National Series poised to make a mark. The sandy, rough terrain lends a distinct advantage to riders who are physically and mentally strong. One thing was for sure as the big 18-wheeler rolled into the paddock area, it was going to be one rough and tough weekend.
Ben Evans, who made his entry into professional racing one week ago in Minnesota, would be sitting out this event due to a muscle injury in his shoulder. Ben will be back in action at Steel City next weekend, but opted out of competition to avoid further aggravating the injury in the sand of Southwick.
“Brawndo” Bob Kiniry was looking for two solid motos this weekend, a feat that would guarantee him a solid overall finish and a boost in the point standings. Everything was off to a great start, as Bob sliced through the pack early in moto one from a somewhat dismal start. Within a few laps Bob had cracked the top fifteen, and soon after the top twelve. As the laps wound down, he was systematically stocking his prey, looking for just the right opportunity to pounce. When the moment arose, Bob was ready and catapulted himself inside the top ten with only a few minutes left in the moto.
With one piece of the puzzle firmly in place, Bob knew he would have to replicate his first moto performance for a solid overall placing. Halfway down the start straightaway, however, things began to come apart. He crossed lines with one of his competitors and ended up on the ground, wondering what had happened. After kicking feverishly, JR Boyd (Bob’s mechanic) push started his bike and he was off. A few laps later, another stroke of bad luck hit. Bob got tangled with a slower rider and they both went down, leaving him on the bottom of the pile and losing even more valuable time. Finally, Bob had a clear track and put on his usual impressive charge. He was only able to get back to 26th at the end of the moto, a few spots shy of the points.
“Redux” Ryan Clark was also looking to string together some solid results in the unforgiving sand of Southwick. His first moto looked to be coming together around the halfway point, but an off-track excursion and some trouble re-entering the course left him well back in the field. Near the end of the long moto, a last ditch effort yielded a few more positions, landing him in 22nd for the moto.
The second moto began much the same, but this time he kept it on course. One minor mistake, where he stalled his bike in a corner, was the only hiccup in his march forward. Two last lap passes moved him up from 18th to 16th, where he would cross the finish line for five national points.
The Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda squad will be back in action next weekend for the final round of the 2008 AMA Motocross National Series in Delmont, PA. The roster will be full, with Bob, Ryan and Ben Evans vying for one last successful result before the book closes on a very rewarding season.
