Redux Beverages/St. Lawrence Radiology Honda Race Recap – presented by Rockwell Watches

March 14th, 2009

New Orleans, LA

After a six-year hiatus, the AMA Supercross Series returned to the New Orleans Superdome for round eleven of the 2009 campaign.  Team Redux Beverages/St. Lawrence Radiology Honda fielded a strong effort in New Orleans, with Phillip Nicoletti competing on a 2009 Honda CRF250R and Jake Marsack doing battle aboard his fuel-injected Honda CRF450R machine.

Phillip Nicoletti looked impressive from the moment he took to the rich New Orleans soil.  Phil mastered the challenging track early and set the quickest lap time in his practice group.  He followed that up in the second practice session with second place, qualifying him twelfth for the evening show.

Phil lined up for heat two in good position.  He wheelied out of the gate and entered the first turn near the tail end of the pack.  A massive crash took out nearly half of the field in turn one, which benefited Phil by moving him into eleventh.  Over the next six laps he was steady, and ultimately picked up the eight place qualifying position.

Phil gated far outside in the main, and again struggled with his jump off the line.  He was mired in the pack, but quickly got to work moving forward.  On the second lap he narrowly avoided landing on a rider over the triple jump, which sent him off the track and again to the back of the pack.  Undeterred, Phil charged lap after lap until he found himself in eleventh position with only two laps to go.  Unfortunately, a mechanical issue prematurely ended his charge.  Phil rode great and was on his way to a solid finish.  He will be hungry for redemption next week at St. Louis.

Jake Marsack has had a rough season.  Always just out of qualifying, Jake was looking to put it in the big show in New Orleans.  He was quick in practice, despite a crash and subsequent pit stop to repair some damage to the bike.

Jake had a mid-pack start in Heat One of the 450cc Supercross Class, and tried to get aggressive early.  On the third lap, Jake took a tumble in the whoop section while trying to pass another rider.  He would have to go the nerve-racking Last Chance Qualifier.

The LCQ is an all-or-nothing six-lap slam fest that grants the top two riders a gate in the all-important main event.  Jake rounded the second corner in second, but had a small hiccup and lost three positions quickly.  He regrouped and passed into fourth, then set his sights on the lead pack.  On the second lap Jake went for an all out pass into third and lost his front end in a tricky turn.  That would effectively end his night, as he picked his bike up and remounted in last position.  He charged back to eleventh position and retired for the evening.

Summary:  We had a bit of a rough time in New Orleans.  Phillip Nicoletti looked great all day, but a stroke misfortune hit with a mechanical DNF in the main event.  Jake Marsack is still looking for his groove and is hoping for better days ahead.  We will be back in full force at St. Louis next weekend for round twelve of the 2009 AMA Supercross Series.  We hope to see you there!
