Press Release

Ramon 4th in GP of France

Steve Ramon headed from the USA to
the circuit of St Jean D’Angely in France this weekend for Round 7 of
the MX1 World Championship. Riders were greeted by glorious sunshine on
Saturday which made for a fast and high speed circuit, however overnight
rain left the circuit very rutted and technical for the main events on
Sunday.

In the Saturday qualifying race
Ramon rode a very smooth race taking 4th position on his Team
Rockstar Teka Suzuki 450.

As the gate dropped for the opening
moto on Sunday the ‘Bomb’ was super quick out the blocks and
headed into the first turn elbow to elbow with championship leader Cairoli.
With the riders settling into a rhythm on lap one it was Cairoli out front
with Ramon in 2nd position and chasing hard. The two riders out
front started to gap the field very slightly, and it was Ramon with the
better lines that was looking strongest. On Lap 11 Ramon made his move and
railed past Cairoli into the lead. Whilst the ‘Bomb’ took
charge up front Cairoli soon learnt the leader’s better lines and
started to challenge to regain the lead. Ramon was slightly held up by a
back-marker and Cairoli sneaked back into the lead whilst Belgian had to
set chase once more. The two rivals raced wheel to wheel on the challenging
circuit, but in the end it was Cairoli that took the win with the Suzuki of
Ramon hot on his heels.

In the second moto Ramon
didn’t get quite the same run down to turn one, leaving him in
8th position on lap one, and having to try and find places to
overtake on the rutted track. The pace was furious up front, but steadily
Ramon came through the pack catching the leaders in a very exciting race,
ultimately crossing the line to take 5th position in the race
and 4th overall, just 2 points off a podium result.

Steve Ramon: "Yesterday I said a
podium would be difficult but in the end it was possible and I came very
close. In the first moto I was riding well and had some good lines but the
problem was the lapped riders: Cairoli was in front of me and I could
follow him without too much trouble but the backmarkers were holding us up
and I knew the others were coming close. I passed Cairoli and was feeling
great on the bike, really smooth, but again the backmarkers played their
part because I had about two or three in front of me around the back
section and they would not move. Cairoli took advantage of that and passed
me back. I was a bit angry about that and just had to accept it. I was
happy with second place even though the win was my goal. In the second moto
the start was not bad but I wasn't feeling as comfortable as in the first
race and was struggling to come to the front. Overall it is good that I am
up there again after the last few weeks; it was a pity not to be on the
podium but I will look to the next one."
