Pocock makes GP turn again as Leib and Charlier miss Portugal

Mel Pocock’s excellent and dominant run to victory in the first round of the European MX2 Championship last week at St Jean D’Angely for the Grand Prix of France means the nineteen year old is a perfect choice for replacement duties for Monster Energy Yamaha this weekend. The seventh round of sixteen in the FIM Motocross World Championship at Agueda for the Portuguese stop on the schedule begins tomorrow and the MX2-GP class will miss both Michael Leib and Christophe Charlier.

Leib had been feeling the effects of an illness undermining his fitness for the last few weeks. The American barely completed the qualification heat in France on Saturday and was in no condition to race on Sunday. After several tests and consultations, strong indications point to the twenty year old suffering the initial stages of Epstein Barr virus. Further examinations are being done in the UK today (Friday) but the immediate solution to prevent the condition becoming chronic involves rest and avoidance of contact sports. More information on the fast Californian will be provided in due course.

Pocock will step into the breach for the fourth time this season after having raced his YZ250F in Holland, Bulgaria and Italy for the team. The Brit is focused squarely on the British and European championships in 2012 and is currently second in the former and leads the standings after one round of seven in the latter.

As suspected the Grand Prix of Portugal has come around too quickly for Christophe Charlier who dislocated his right shoulder last Sunday in France. The Frenchman should be back on his factory YZ250FM next weekend in Bastogne for the trip to Belgium
