FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 1 July 2009 – Uddevalla is now ready to welcome the fastest female racers in the world headed by Steffi Laier of Germany, as the venue will host the series for the first time since it was upgraded to the status of FIM World Championship.
The latest round in Germany last month added drama to the series which was headed by defending Championship Lancelot until Laier’s home event. The French entered Teutschenthal with a dislocated right shoulder and the injury got worse through the weekend. Eventually Lancelot pulled out of round five and is probably done with this season ending in two rounds, while Laier won and took the lead of the FIM Women’s World Championship.

Taking victory in the two German heats, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Laier stormed to the series lead and is confident for Uddevalla, the venue marking her FIM Women’s World Cup victory in 2005 in occasion of the series’ first edition. In 2006 the German was a close second behind overall winner Prumm as the duo ended level in points, while in 2007 Laier won heat one to crash and dnf in moto two.
Just 21 points behind Laier sits German compatriot Papenmeier of Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2. Despite taking back to back podiums since round two in Agueda, Papenmeier has not yet won an overall.
Kawasaki Racing’s Lancelot is now third in the Championship but with the defending Champion missing the remainder of the season Kawasaki fellow rider Franke aims at breaking into the top three this weekend at Uddevalla, where she took a podium in 2007. Franke is only 32 points behind red plate holder Laier and still has the chance of leading an all German top three in this year’s Championship.
Being fifth in the standings, home rider Mann of KTM Scandinavia is chasing her first season’s podium. The only home podium appearance of the 22 year old happened in 2006.
Kane of Northern Ireland performed strong in Germany where she was fourth overall. The Suzuki mounted rider is now sixth in the series and holds a chance of breaking into the top five this weekend.
Other Swedish Romlin is due to comeback to racing at home this weekend after a troublesome injury.
