Moto XXX Report

This past weekend the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross series rolled into Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Houston round is typically towards the end of the season but with the city now hosting round 6, the riders, teams, and fans were met with much cooler and overcast weather than normal. Fortunately for Team Moto XXX, veteran rider Kyle Lewis was back in action and looking to put his potent Honda CRF450 back into the main event.

When the day time qualifying sessions were all completed and the heat races were set, both Josh Summey and Kyle Lewis lined up together in heat race one. When the gate dropped and the pack took off, both riders were battling midpack starts. Kyle and Josh both went right to work trying to pick off as many riders as possible. By the half way mark Josh and Kyle were right on the verge of the nine man cut-off with time running out. Unfortunately, as Josh was entering one of the rhythm sections another rider went down and left Josh no where to go. Josh collided with the downed bike and was left struggling to get the bikes separated as riders jumped past. By the time he got going again, time had run out and Josh crossed the line in 13th position. Lewis was a little more “Lucky” as he crossed the line 9th and secured his spot on the line in the main event. After the race, Kyle commented: “I saw the group of riders right in front of me and I just had a feeling someone was going to go down. I just tried to ride smart and do what I needed to do in order to make it into the main event.”

The LCQ got off the line seeing Josh once again entering the first turn in the middle of the pack. With only a few laps to work with Josh got on the gas and by the half way mark was sitting in fifth position. He would make one more pass, putting him in fourth, before ultimately crossing the line two spots short of the main event.

Kyle “Lucky” Lewis lined up to the outside of the 20 rider gate and looked poised to grab the holeshot. As the gate hit the red Texas clay, Kyle got an excellent jump and drove hard into the first turn. Unfortunately, time and space ran out and Kyle was forced to back off, missing the holeshot by less than a bike length and going down. As Lewis scrambled back to his bike, he knew it was going to be tough to catch back up to the pack. Kyle put his head down and rode hard but was only able to claw his way up to 18th by the events end. Still, Kyle tried to remain optimistic: “I really wanted to get the holeshot and put in a solid ride tonight. I just went into the first turn as fast as possible and it just didn’t work out, but there’s always next weekend!”

The upcoming round will be held this weekend at Qualcomm stadium in what the industry hopes will be a warm and sunny San Diego, California. This is the final California Supercross of the year so be sure to make it out to the races before the series heads East. See you there!
