Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki takes another win at Calgary

Maier sweeps MX2, Goerke maintains MX1 points lead

Kamloops, BC(June 18, 2012) Round three of the 2012 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals is in the books as the series made a stop at the Wild Rose MX track, in the heart of the city of Calgary, Alberta. The unique location makes it one of the highlights of the Canadian series and always brings out a large and enthusiastic crowd, who got to witness a great day of racing and another trip to the winner’s circle for the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki team.

Starting off with the MX2 class, series points leader, Teddy Maier, came into the weekend sporting a three moto win streak and wasted no time in putting his stamp on the competition at Calgary as he grabbed great starts in both motos, quickly made his way to the front and checked out to make it another weekend with a pair of moto wins and the overall victory. With his moto streak now up to five straight wins, Maier has stretched his points lead out to 17 points atop the MX2 leaderboard.

Said Maier of his dominant day: “Man, it was an awesome weekend. I got good starts and was able to find good lines and just kept it on two wheels. I can’t ask for anything more. I’m happy to get another double moto sweep and now we’re heading to one of my favorite tracks on the circuit – Edmonton.”

His fellow MX2 teammate, Kyle Beaton, also rode a great race in the 1st moto as he pulled a good start and battled up at the front of the pack, where he joined Maier on the podium with a third place finish. Unfortunately, he collided with another rider while battling for another podium spot and went down hard. After being down a while, he managed to remount and gut out a 28th place finish and despite being a little banged up should be good to keep his solid season going this weekend at Edmonton.

In MX1, all eyes were on series points leader, Matt Goerke, as he rode into Calgary sporting a perfect four for four moto win streak. Logging the fastest lap time in qualifying, Goerke again proved to be the class of the field in moto one as he cut his way through the pack enroute to his fifth straight moto win. In moto two, it looked like it would be another Goerke sweep as he waged an epic battle with Bobby Kiniry for the moto win as the two went wheel to wheel, lap after lap. Unfortunately for Goerke, he would tip over while trying to make a pass for the lead with two laps to go and have to settle for second. Luckily though, his 1-2 moto finishes tied Kiniry’s 2-1 meaning that his points lead atop the MX1 standings remains unchanged at 22.

In his rookie season, Tyler Villopoto, has been quietly having a great year and again he put in a great ride at Calgary as he raced to 5-6 moto finishes for 6th overall in MX1. Villopoto is pretty happy so far with how things are going: “Obviously, I want to get a win and I feel like I can but I’m having a blast in Canada so far. I’m just going to keep my head down and keep working to make that next step and battle with my teammate, Goerke and the rest of the front runners.”

The team now heads north to Alberta’s capital city - Edmonton, for round four of the series, at Castrol Raceway. For more information on the Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Series, visit www.cmrcracing.com
