Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki on the Podium at Season Opener

Teddy
Maier finishes fourth overall in team's MX1 debut

Kamloops,
BC
(June 6, 2011)
The
opening round of the 2011 Monster Energy CMRC Nationals kicked off
this past weekend at Kamloops, British Columbia's Whispering Pines
Raceway and the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki team was excited
to show off their new lineup in front of their hometown crowd.
Stepping up for 2011, the team was fielding it's first MX1 effort
with top riders, Teddy Maier and Matt Goerke along with their MX2
team of Austin Politelli and Tyler Sjoberg.

Things
started off well in qualifying as Maier logged the 3
rd
quickest time in MX1 while in MX2, Sjoberg and Politelli qualified in
the number 2 and 3 positions, respectively. The stage was set for the
opening motos and the team wasted no time getting to the front as
Leading Edge support rider, Spencer Knowles, grabbed the holeshot
with his two teammates close behind. Sjoberg quickly worked his way
into the lead and the California native began stretching out his
lead. Unfortunately, he made a mistake just before the finish line
and tipped over. After re-firing his KX250F, he began another charge
for the front of the pack, eventually working his way up to 4
th
by moto's end.

MX1 started out great as well for the team as Teddy Maier, making his
MX1 debut after three years with the team in the MX2 class, grabbed a
third place start and battled with the leading duo of Facciotti and
Klatt. The 2009 MX2 champ rode strong all moto to finish on the
podium in third in Leading Edge's debut race in the MX1 class. Behind
him, Leading Edge support rider Brock Hoyer was having his best ever
450 race as he ran close behind in fourth. He would stay strong all
moto and finish a career best sixth by the time the checkered flag
flew. Matt Goerke would fall victim to a first turn crash but remount
to wage an impressive comeback, battling all the way to ninth by
moto's end despite still nursing an injured wrist from a crash during
the Supercross season.

For the second MX2 moto it was Knowles grabbing another of his
patented holeshots with his teammate Sjoberg in tow. Sjoberg worked
his way by and running in the second spot waged a great battle with
Jeremy Medaglia. The two riders swapped positions several times but
Sjoberg put on a late race push to get back by and take second place
in the moto and third overall on the strength of his 4-2 moto scores.
Politelli was also in the mix as the Californian rookie rode strong
to finish fourth in the moto. Knowles finished in the top ten as well
with a seventh, giving the New Westminster, BC native sixth overall
on the day.

For the final moto of the day, Goerke elected to sit out and allow
his wrist to heal up a bit more so all eyes were on Maier and he rode
hard, cutting through the pack to grab fourth and make a strong push
for third but he would end up taking fourth at the checkers and
fourth overall on the day. Hoyer continued his strong riding from
moto one to take seventh in the moto and sixth overall – his best
ever MX1 finish for the Williams Lake, BC native. Said Maier after
the race, “ It was OK, I put a lot of pressure on myself and I
didn't ride as well as I know I can but I came out of there with some
solid points. My bike was awesome and I'm so glad for the opportunity
with the team to step up to MX1. I'm looking forward to next
weekend.”

With
the hometown round in the books, the team now heads west to Vancouver
Island and next weekend's round at Nanaimo's Wastelands MX track. For
