Makita Suzuki's Carmichael Makes Triumphant Return to Amp'd Mobile Supercross

Kawasaki’s Villopoto Wins Third of the Season in AMA Supercross Lites

SAN FRANCISCO (January 27, 2007) – Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael made a triumphant return to the Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series with a spectacular win tonight before a crowd of 37,462 at AT&T Park. Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto won the AMA Supercross Lites main event.

Yamaha’s Chad Reed grabbed the $1,500 Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap main event. Series rivals James Stewart and Carmichael settled in behind, setting up a three-man battle for the lead. The opening laps of the race would see five lead changes as each of the three riders took turns in the top spot. Two crashes by Stewart and another by Reed, ultimately cost them a shot at a win as Carmichael ended up with the hard-fought victory.

Stewart brought his Kawasaki home to a second place finish, while Reed ended up third.

“These guys were riding buck wild out there tonight,” said Carmichael in reference to the crashes by Stewart and Reed. “The track was pretty rutty and I was just laying back and taking advantage of what was happening in front of me. I’m happy to win again in San Francisco and the next time you’ll see me is at Atlanta.”

Kawasaki’s Chris Gosselaar earned the $1,000 Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the AMA Supercross Lites main event but was quickly dropped to the number two position by his teammate Villopoto, who shot to the lead. Once out front, Villopoto began to pull away and was later aided by a crash that took out Gosselaar and KTM’s Martin Davalos, who was running in third.

Villopoto took the win, his third of the season, while Honda’s Josh Grant and Jake Weimer finished second and third, respectively.

Tonight’s AMA Supercross race will air on CBS Sports, Sunday, January 28, at 12:00 p.m. EST. The AMA Supercross Lites class race will air on SPEED Sunday, February 3, at 6:00 p.m. EST. Amp’d Mobile Supercross continues next Saturday, February 3, for the last of three races at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium.
