MDK KTM Race Report – Washougal, WA

Washougal, WA – The MDK KTM Factory Teams walked away with three top ten overall finishes at the ninth round of the AMA National Motocross Championship Series.

When the gates dropped for moto one of the Motocross Lites class MDK KTM Factory Lites rider Martin Davalos jumped out toward the front. His teammates Ryan Sipes and Matt Goerke started mid-pack while the final Lites Team member, Justin Brayton, suffered a crash on the first lap pushing him back to the end of the pack.

Davalos was able to hold on to his 5th place start until lap seven when he was passed by his teammate, Sipes, who was making a hard charge for the front. Sipes moved into 5th and began a tight race with Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider Brett Metcalfe. The two riders battled down until the last lap where Sipes passed Metcalfe to take 4th. Davalos finished 8th, Goerke worked his way up to 12th and Brayton put in a decent ride from near last to 23rd.

In Motocross Lites moto two, Davalos, Sipes and Brayton all started within the front fifteen while Goerke was headed for the holeshot. He just missed it, and came around the first lap in 2nd. He held 2nd until lap three when he was passed by Ryan Dungey. Meanwhile, Brayton had begun to move up from his 14th place start, when on the 3rd lap he crashed hard enough to knock himself out which, unfortunately, caused him to DNF the second moto. Davalos was riding in 9th until the halfway point where he accidentally clipped the back wheel of Jake Weimer and crashed. He remounted in 19th and eventually passed back up to 15th by the end of the moto. His 8-15 scores set him in 12th overall for the day. One rider who did not have any trouble getting up front on the Washougal track was Sipes. He started 13th in moto two but had moved into 9th by lap three and continued to move forward finishing 5th. His 4-5 scores earned him 5th overall. “The MDK KTM Team is really excited with Ryan’s (Sipes) performance. He has consistently been improving at each race and we know that once he perfects his starts he will be a podium contender,” commented MDK KTM Factory Lites Team Manager Danny Paladino.

As moto one for the Motocross class took off MDK KTM Factory rider Nick Wey got collected in a crash through the S-turns right after the start and was forced to work his way up through the pack. By the end of the first lap he had moved up to 27th and by the end of the moto he had passed his way up into an impressive 14th place finish. His teammate, Billy Laninovich, put in his best ride of the season to finish 10th the first moto.

In Motocross moto number two, Wey and Laninovich both garnered mediocre starts coming around 14th and 17th after the first lap. Wey would ride a consistent moto to finish 11th overall. Laninovich also rode a smooth and safe race to finish 14th overall. His 10-14 scores earned him 10th overall – his first top ten of the season.
