Larsen wins for JDR Motorex KTM at Newcastle Super X round one

American PJ Larsen was victorious for JDR Motorex KTM
in Saturday night’s opening round of the 2010 Super X, Australasian
Supercross Championship, held at Newcastle’s Energy Australia
Stadium.

Larsen’s victory was the perfect present on his
20th birthday, adding the opening Super X Lites round victory of the season
to an impressive list of achievements already this year, including winning
the Pro Lites MX Nationals Australian Motocross Championship.

Originally from South Carolina, Larsen won the opening final in the
Double Header event before taking second behind defending champion Matt
Moss in final number two, results that were good enough to clinch the
overall victory.

“The whole JDR Motorex KTM team has put
in a lot of hard work and it’s showing – we had a good
result,” Larsen commented. “We were able to take out the first
main and got second in the second main, so it was good to win the overall.
Now I just need to maintain what I’ve got – I have good speed
and fitness – so we just need to stay consistent.”

Larsen was joined on the overall podium by teammate and former Supercross
Lites Champion Ryan Marmont, who scored 3-6 results in the pair of 10-lap
main events aboard his 250SX-F.

“I felt strong all day and
had good qualifying speed,” Marmont reflected. “In the first
main I got a good start and ran in third place out of trouble, but then in
the second one my start wasn’t so good and I made it hard for myself.
The track was hard to pass, so it was a case of follow the leader. Overall
it was really good to get the first one out of the way with points in the
top three. Now we need to carry this momentum and work on my intencity into
Canberra.”

The Open class saw talented 18-year-old Tye
Simmonds finish sixth overall for the night, debuting the 350SX-F in Super
X with 9-6 results in the pair of 12-lap Double Header main events.

“I’m very, very upset with my results. My fitness was
fine, but I rode tight and defensive, so I suffered from arm-pump,”
Simmonds explained. “We had great preparation and the bike’s
unreal, so it’s just upsetting. We’ll go back and work on a few
things now though, trying to get it sorted for Canberra. I want to be on
the podium, that’s my goal for this year – I should be up front
with the American guys banging bars. We’ll come out next week
swinging, for sure.”

World famous American rider Mike
Alessi endured a difficult debut in Super X, qualifying strongly in fifth
position and taking fourth place in heat two of the night before bad luck
spoiled his attempts at claiming a good haul of points in Newcastle’s
finals.

“Australian Super X is great and the track was
really good, but I just had some bad luck,” the 22-year-old
Californian commented. “In the first 12-lap main event the
shift-lever broke off on the first lap, which was unfortunate, but when I
pulled in to change it the officials said we couldn’t go back out.

“In the second main event I got a great start with the
holeshot, and then somehow I got a tough block caught on the foot peg. It
was unfortunate again because I got a really good start, but I had to pull
into the mechanics’ area and get it taken off on the first lap so I
immediately went back to last. I was charging back through the pack and
unfortunately had a fall, but it was just one of those nights where bad
luck hit me. It was tough. The goal is to go to Canberra and get a good
result, hopefully to be up on that podium.”

Despite his
disappointments in the second final, Alessi still circulated to finish 17th
and take home four points for the series.

JDR Motorex KTM team
manager Jay Rynenberg was satisfied with the team’s performance on
the night overall, now hoping to build on the momentum into next
weekend’s second round in a bid to get the Open class team riders on
the overall podium with the Lites contenders.

“Coming
into the round we all knew PJ and Ryan would be fast, so it was a really
good start to the season to take good points,” Rynenberg said.
“PJ kind of struggled with his starts a bit and Ryan maybe has to get
a little more aggressive, but they are all things we know we need to work
on. It will be good to go and do some homework and come back even
stronger.

“In the Open class I think Tye normally takes a
round or two to settle in, so that’s typical Tye but I think at the
next round we’ll see a better Tye and then he’ll get stronger
and stronger from there so we have that to look forward to. Mike has the
speed and got the start in the second final, but he just had a lot of bad
luck on the night. Hopefully by next weekend he’ll sort that out and
we’ll come back stronger and get some strong points.”

The seven-round series will now head to Canberra in the ACT this weekend,
on Saturday 23 October.
