Corona, CA - Round 4 of the AMA Supercross Series dropped the gate at the only Northern California round this past weekend in Oakland. The Race Tech crew was once again on hand to support each of our riders.
In the premier division, Ben Lamay looked to jump-start his season by qualifying 17th fastest against one of the deepest fields in Supercross history. Fellow Race Tech riders Cody Gilmore, Michael Horban, Dustin Pipes, and new Race Tech recruit Robert Noftz all also advanced to the heat races in the premier class.
Teddy Maier continued his strong season in timed qualifying with a top 20 time once again. Killy Rusk and Preston Mull also showed strong and advanced through to the evening program.
During the heat races, Ben Lamay backed up his solid qualifying time by earning a direct transfer to the Supercross Class Main Event out of his heat race.
In the Supercross Lites division, Killy Rusk put in an impressive ride on his Rockwell/FirePoliceMX.com/Race Tech Honda 250f and transferred directly to his first main event of the season out of his heat race. Teddy Maier would have an off track excursion after running as high as 3rd and have to ride his first LCQ of the season. During the LCQ, Maier challenged for the last transfer spot but was un-able to make the move into second.
In the Supercross Class Main Event, Ben Lamay would get boxed out off the start and have to charge his way from the back of the pack. As the track started to get extremely rough and rutted, Lamay and his Race Tech suspension began moving to the front. Just past the halfway point of the race, Lamay was moving forward and looking to find himself in the top 15 before the checkered flag when he had a clutch failure. Ben would end the night in 17th place. Look for him to continue to progress as the season rolls on.
In the Supercross Lites Class Finale, Killy Rusk piloted his Rockwell/FirePoliceMX.com bike up near the top 15 off the start, but some mistakes early dropped him back. Once the racing spread out a bit, Rusk found his pace and began passing riders. At the halfway point of the race, he clicked off his fastest lap. A few mistakes cost him in the closing laps and Rusk would cross the line in 19th position. After showing great speed but struggling to get the results he's capable of prior to Oakland, Rusk will look to build on this performance for the rest of the season of Supercross Lites West Coast racing.
Also in action over the weekend was the Gold Cup Series at Milestone Raceway in Southern California. Race Tech's 50cc hot shoe Hunter Yoder has been turning heads all winter long by railing his Cobra 50 faster than most big bike riders and catapulting over massive doubles 60+ feet. Although he's only 7 years old, the younger side of his division; Yoder consistently mixes it up at the front of the pack during his quest for a Gold Cup Championship in the 50cc 7-8 year old division and the Super PeeWee 7-9 class.
At the second round of the series, Yoder would capture the overall win in the 50cc 7-8 division and take 2nd in the Super PeeWee class. Yoder continues to test with Race Tech and prepare for the 2012 season where he'll take on the Amateur Nationals all summer long.
