James Marshall Project Conccusion Project

The James Marshall Project is excited to announce participation in an Innovative program for managing sports-related concussions in conjunction with the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute Concussion Program at Memorial Hermann. Participants of the “ 2012 Outlaw452 Main Event / AMA District 20 Series” running August 11th – October 14th will have access to education, pre-injury neurocognitive baseline assessments, and post-concussion care with concussion specialist. The James Marshall Project is committed to ensuring that the highest quality care for athletes with sport-related concussion is provided.

With the information published in recent years concerning concussion and potential long term effects, management of concussion has changed. The James Marshall Project will follow proper procedures and management in order to protect athletes from unnecessary cumulative effects and second impact syndrome. As part of the program, athletes will undergo a pre-injury baseline assessment utilizing ImPACT™, a computerized neurocognitive test that is typically used in children, adolescents, and adults who participate in sports as a means to assess an individual’s memory, thinking speed, concentration and reaction time. ImPACT™ is set up in a “video game” type format and usually takes about 25-30 minutes to complete and is available for ages 10 through 60. In the event a concussion should occur, the athlete can be re-tested and the post-concussion data can be compared against baseline (pre-injury) data. It is strongly recommend that baseline and post-injury tests be administered under the supervision of a neuropsychologist or a concussion specialist trained in the interpretation of neurocognitive data. Based upon the post-injury evaluation, the severity of the injury and prognosis can be assessed, and then recommendations considering academic or work related accommodations can be made. It is also a valuable tool for returning athletes back to motorsport safely.

  • The ImPACT™ baseline test being provided is the exact same test mandated by MX Sports for the2012 AMA Outdoor Series and being mandated by Field Motorsports for the 2013 AMA Supercross Series for the Professional Racer entering these events.

  • The Ironman Sports Medicine Institute Concussion Program at Memorial Hermann is proud to provide complimentary ImPACT™ baseline tests to school-aged athletes 10-18. For school-aged athletes between 6-9 years of age, an alternate neurocognitive baseline will be given. Athletes over the age of 18 will be assessed a $25 fee for baseline testing.

JMP and Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann will also provide track side education at the opening round of the series being held at 3 Palms Action Sport Park on August 11th. Kevin Bastin, Director of Athletic Training Services for the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine, will be on hand to answer questions about pre-injury baseline testing and the Concussion Program at Memorial Hermann. If anyone racing in this series would like to have their baseline test done prior to the first race or would like to learn more about this program and how to support JMP in taking this to the next level contact Cody Lipps at:
