Heading into Round 8, and the half-way point of the 2009 World Motocross Championship, Gautier Paulin has narrowly missed out on podium finish in front of a home crowd in Ernee France.
Paulin suffered a poor start in the Saturday qualifying and placed outside the top ten coming through the first turn. Having to fight through the pack on the fast technical circuit, the Bud Racing Kawasaki rider pulled out all the stops, climbing up to 5th position by the end of the short 20 min + 2 laps race.
Just before the start of the opening MX2 moto on Sunday the rain began to pour down, making the hard pack circuit extremely wet and loose on top. Paulin got an average start and was left in the pack to rub elbows. With the track so wet and rutted it became harder and harder to pass as the amount of good lines were drastically reduced. Giving his all, the determined Frenchman tried everywhere to gain the advantage, but in the end was only able to get himself up to 8th position.
In the 2nd moto it was yet another average start for Paulin, as he rounded up the opening lap in 8th position. Setting the fastest lap times towards the end of the race, Paulin came through to 4th position at the chequered flag securing 4th overall for the GP.
“I knew that this would be a hard GP especially because every French rider wants to perform in front of a home crowd. My starts were nothing special and left me with a lot of work to do on a track that was extremely difficult to pass on. I know I can win, I just need to make it happen at the start of the race.” explained an optimistic Paulin.
A week’s break will afford the GP’s riders a little breathing room before the second half of the FIM MX World championships continues in Teutschenthal - Germany,at the ‘Talkessel’ circuit on the 20-21 June.
