Press Release

GP Flanders-Lommel

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 19 February 2009 – The first weekend of August is almost a classic date on which a Belgian GP is held. In the previous years it was the date on which the legendary GP Namur could be found, 2008 saw the return of one of the hardest deep sand race tracks: GP Flanders at the “Stedelijk Motorcrossterrein Lommel”.

For 2009, GP Flanders – Lommel, once again can be found on the Motocross GP Calendar on August 1st and 2nd.

This year’s GP sees a new organizational structure, with Stefan Everts and Eric Geboers joining forces to make this event a success on all fronts. S72 will be an important addition to the organization on the PR-side of things but also as an experienced advisory member of the practical organization.

Furthermore, the two MX World Championship legends will team up to try and get the greatest Motocross event – the Red Bull Motocross Of Nations – to Belgium in 2012. Why 2012? Because it is exactly 30 years after the Americans placed one of the biggest milestones in Motocross History in the same “hell of Lommel”. During the 1981 Motocross of Nations, the Americans broke the winning streak of Belgium – on home turf and in the same sand they came so reknown for.

So, if the 2012 Red Bull Motocross of Nations would come to Lommel – it surely would bring legendary racing!

Lommel GP organizer Eric Geboers said: “Since many years there is a good synergy between Stefan Everts and myself, both wanting a strong and solid structure for the Belgian Motocross Grand Prix. Being able to join experiences with Stefan is a very big step forward, to bring the best out of GP MX1 & MX2 - and in the long run - for the possible Red Bull Motocross of Nations in 2012. I am really keen to step into the challenge together with Stefan, the city of Lommel, Provincie Limburg, and the Flemish government “TopSport Vlaanderen”.”

Lommel GP organizer Stefan Everts said: “I am very happy that Eric succeeded to build a strong relationship with the Belgian authorities and motivated them to support our great sport. This makes it possible for me to bring an added value, based on the experiences of my professional career. The improving relationship between teams, riders and promotor gives a lot of opportunities to do good things for the Grand Prix motocross sport. Having the Red Bull MXoN at Lommel in 2012 in mind, I am sure that Eric and myself are the perfect team to bring the biggest MX event of the year to Belgium.”

Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo said: “We are very proud that 2 Motocross legends have joint venture to organize one of our most prestigious Grand Prix events, we also support their plan to bring the Red Bull Motocross of Nations in the near future to Belgium to Lommel. We really believe that with Eric’s, Stefan’s and our experience we will make these events absolutely fantastic for all the fans. Another important point is the amateur activity which Youthstream is fully behind because it is the base of our sports pyramid.”

For the 2009 GP Flanders, visibility for everybody attending the race is high on the to-do list of the organization. One of the goals is to create large natural grandstands for general public, offering a better view on large parts of the race track.

Next to the Motocross GP, the side program with the Motocross congress and the Amateur-races “MX Rookie” will turn this GP weekend into a week that cannot be missed for all motorsport enthousiasts!

More detailed information will be communicated on April 22nd, when the official press conference will be held at Lommel, on the race track.
