FUNCHAL, 5 June 2007- Today is the World Environment Day, an international celebration that was started in 1974.
Environment is one of the key issues nowadays, and the United Nations are doing their best to preserve what we have.
The FIM-Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme fully supports this project as an International body. Since 1994 FIM has edicted and implemented an Environmental Code for all is motorcycle events. The FIM was also the first International Sports Federation ever to adopt an environmental code. Moreover, a Memorandum of Cooperation between the FIM and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) was signed last December in Lausanne, during the Global Forum for Sport and Environment, whose main objective is to provide a framework for cooperation and support aiming at reducing the environmental impact of motorcycle events.
In off-road racing, such impact can be summarized in two aspects: sound and protection of the ground.
In its sports regulations, FIM has adopted very strict sound level regulations to reduce the acoustic pollution dramatically.
Moreover, all teams involved in the off-road FIM World Championships use environmental mats to prevent chemical liquids from contaminating the ground.
