Cairoli and Roczen Take Pole in Lommel

LOMMEL (BELGIUM), 31 July 2010 – Round 11 started with Italian Antonio Cairoli obtaining his third Lovemytime MX1 Pole Position Award of the season in the challenging sandy track of Lommel while Ken Roczen won the MX2 qualifying race for his fourth time to become the rider with the most pole positions in the Championship.

It was not an easy race for Cairoli experiencing not an outstanding start and making a small mistake while removing his tear-off. However, he managed to close the big gap with the riders at the front and finished first. Second was Tanel Leok and third Steve Ramon.

Roczen went out victorious in the MX2 qualifying race and succeeded to keep the advantage over second classified Jeffrey Herlings throughout the entire race. Third was Shaun Simpson and fourth was the current red plate holder Marvin Musquin.

On today’s Veterans race one, home rider Pascal Bal finished first, second was Erwin Hendrickx and third was Ton van Grinsven. Red plate holder Mats Nilsson could only be fourth.

MX1

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX1’s Cairoli was first on Saturday’s qualifying race and obtained his third Lovemytime MX1 Pole Position Award of the season being in France the last one he got. The Italian could only be seventh by the end of the first lap but he achieved in climbing up positions until reaching the top. Cairoli admitted that he made a mistake while removing his tear-off and it caused him a small crash. However, he took advantage of leading riders’ tiredness –first Bobryshev then Leok- and crossed the finish line on first position.

Second classified was LS Motors Honda’s Leok, who did a consistent race and rode among the top three along Saturday’s qualifying race. After an excellent start he was third at the end of the starting lap and he clinched the lead for a couple of laps but he could not stand Cairoli’s pressure and could only be second.

Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1’s Ramon was third and will be able to choose a good gate for tomorrow’s race to fulfil his fans expectative and try to take his maiden home GP victory. Fourth was Russian Bobryshev who started leading the race but a big crash made him lose his lead with four laps to go. The CAS Honda man is confident enough to do a good performance on tomorrow’s race.

Other Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1 rider Desalle completed the top five and also expects to provide good riding to his audience. Gonçalves was a positive sixth ahead of Philippaerts, Nagl and Coppins.

Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci’s De Dyker, who won last year’s GP of Limburg, finished eleven right after his Belgian compatriot Strijbos, who took the holeshot but could not keep the rhythm of his rivals.

Kawasaki Racing Team’s Barragán could not ride as he had expected due to a mechanical problem, but he wishes to get a solid result in tomorrow’s races in order to start gaining confidence for the future Gran Prix’s. Even his team mates Pourcel and Boog did not manage to finish the race with the latter hurting his left leg in a crash.

Japanese rider Yu Hirata found Lommel a very difficult track to debut on in comparison to his home circuits. Hirata-san also experienced the high level that the riders of the FIM Motocross World Championship being only able to finish 28.
JK Datch Aprilia Racing Team presented his new young talent Smith, who has just turned 17, to make his debut in the FIM Motocross World Championship this weekend in Lommel. The Brit finished 27th in today’s qualifying race.

MX2

Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Roczen achieved his fourth pole position of the season and became the rider with the most Lovemytime MX2 Pole Position Awards of the FIM Motocross World Championship. Although he left the holeshot on hands of French Musquin, he took the lead already on lap two and increased the rhythm in such a way that the gap with the second classified Herlings by the end of the race was of almost 9 seconds.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX2’s Herlings started behind his teammates Musquin and Simpson but performed such an excellent race that he gained four positions and finished second. The sand specialist is expected to do a good performance in Lommel after winning his first GP in Valkenswaard, track where the sand and deep roots are also the protagonists.

Third position was for Red Bull KTM Factory MX2’s Simpson, who seemed to be recovered from the blood deficiencies that were detected some weeks ago. Fourth was his teammate and series leader Musquin, who in spite of riding second during the first half of the races, made several mistakes and had to settle down for such position. However, the French will not put things easy for his rivals and will try to reinforce his leadership.

Kawasaki CLS’ Van Horebeek completed the top five as he struggled with the track as much as team mate Frossard, winning the Swedish GP but ending today’s qualifying in 11th.

Second best home rider was Nestaan JM Racing KTM’s Roelants finishing seventh right behind Paulin and his compatriot Triest was 13.

VETERANS

Belgian sand specialist Bal went out with the victory of the first race of the Belgian round and obtained really valuable points to still fight for the Cup. Second was Hendrickx, who finished just two seconds behind the first classified, and third was the Dutch Van Grinsven.

Current red plate holder Nilsson could only be fourth and he knows that if he wants to win the penultimate race of the FIM Veterans World Cup he will have to improve his performance for tomorrow’s final race.
