Cairoli and Musquin Take Poles with German stars Nagl and Roczen to Start From Second

TEUTSCHENTHAL (GERMANY), 20 June 2009 – After a week break the FIM Motocross World Championship engines were back to work for the opening day of the German Grand Prix.

Home rider Nagl was snatched the MX1 qualifying victory by a strong Cairoli working his way up from fifth. In the MX2 class it was Musquin taking the honours as the winner of the latest two GP’s ended ahead of other German Roczen and Frossard.

The day remained dry until a short rain shower hit the Talkessel facility at 18.30.

MX1

Yamaha Red Bull De Carli’s won a thrilling qualifying heat where he put together a strong recovery from the bottom of the top five – despite he held the first gate pick courtesy of the fastest pre qualifying time.

Nagl led the pack into the first corner with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing German setting the crowd on fire at his first attempt to pull away with the lead. De Dycker of Teka Suzuki WMX1 made it to the French GP winner’s tail and tried to pass several times with Nagl defending the lead.

Eventually Belgian De Dycker settled for second while Nagl opened up a new gap to try and secure the pole.

At half race distance it was Cairoli working his way up through the pack with the two time MX2 World Champion showing an impressive pace. The Italian made it past De Dycker to take second and start closing the gap from a quick Nagl.

With two laps to go Cairoli was at Nagl’s back wheel and he made it through at the very last lap to take his third qualifying moto win of 2009 ahead of Nagl and De Dycker.

Tanel Leok was a solid fourth ahead of Desalle, Coppins and Pichon, at his last GP appearance with the Martin Honda team.

Philippaerts struggled and finished tenth.

MX2

Taking his third consecutive pole position and fourth this season, KTM’s Marvin Musquin dominated the German GP’s qualifying with another impressive performance as he carries on showing an incredible form since he joined the works KTM squad in Mallory Park.

Home star Roczen steered his Teak Suzuki Europe World MX2 machine to a solid second place. The 15 year old, who is tenth in the Championship despite having raced only four Grand Prix’s due to his age (he turned 15 –the minimum age to race in the series- just before the Portuguese round), looked strong and will go for his maiden win tomorrow.

CLS’ Frossard was third in today’s qualifying heat but the Frenchman, who took his maiden podium at Teutschenthal last year, aims higher for tomorrow’s heats.

On the other hand Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Goncalves jumped out of the first corner in second place but was eventually passed first by Roczen and right after by Frossard to end in fourth.

Guarneri completed the top five while Championship runner up Paulin was eighth.

It was a tough qualifying for Larrieu, who just took his maiden podium in France two weeks ago. The Frenchman crashed at lap one when he was inside the top five and ended 20th.
