CMRC Monster Energy Motocross Nationals

The home stretch of the nine-round Monster Energy Motocross Nationals kicks off this weekend at Riverglade MX Park in Moncton, NB, with pre-race festivities starting on Friday, August 3, and Round 7 of the MX1 Nationals on Sunday, August 5. Also on the schedule will be Round 3 of the four-round MX2 East title chase.

Riverglade MX Park – which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year – is home to Atlantic Canada’s premier motocross facility. No less than 15 National Championship rounds have been run at the venue since it opened in 1977.

The race track, one of the most demanding in the country, has undergone extensive renovations recently to better accommodate the big-bore 4-stroke motorcycles used in motocross competition today. Among the improvements implemented are widening of the track, to allow for easier passing, and the creation of longer straightaways for maximum speed.

“It’s a special year for us and we’re celebrating with a fireworks display on Friday night and a dance on Saturday night. This is also the occasion of our 2nd Annual Brian House Memorial National so we want to put on a good presence in his memory,” said event promoter Larry Northrup.

Racing action – which starts on Saturday with the amateur classes – is expected to be very intense on Sunday in the pro ranks. This season has shaped up to be one of the most competitive in many years. No less than four different riders, including Brookfield, Nova Scotia’s Mitch Cooke (Suzuki/OTSFF/Rockstar), have won an overall in the first six rounds.

The current top five standings in MX1 are truly an international affair with Ithaca, NY’s Paul Carpenter (Monster Energy/Cernics/Kawasaki) at the helm; followed in second place by former champion Marco Dubé (Royal Distributing Stoneridge KTM) of Quebec; Ohio’s Jeff Gibson (Monster Energy/Cernics/Kawasaki) in third; British Columbia’s Colton Facciotti (Toyota Yamaha BlackfootDirect.com Fox Racing) in fourth; and New Zealand’s Mason Phillips (Royal Distributing Stoneridge KTM) in fifth.

In the MX2 East points chase, Ohio’s Michael Willard (Royal Distributing/Stoneridge/ KTM), who won the championship in 2005, leads the standings with two rounds left on the schedule. In second place is Quebec’s Tim Tremblay (Royal Distributing Stoneridge KTM); followed by Ontario’s Tyler Medaglia (Suzuki/OTSFF/Rockstar); Tennessee’s Jacob Saylor (Yamaha) and Ontario’s Jay Burke (Label IT/Honda) in third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Expected to be in the mix at Riverglade will be Atlantic Canada’s Davey Fraser (Yamaha) and Nathan Slater (Honda) in MX2, and Mitch Cooke, Ryan Lockhart (Suzuki/OTSFF/Rockstar), and Johnny Montes (Kawasaki) in MX1.

In addition to fireworks on Friday night, Fredericton-based Destroyer Films, which has been documenting the previous national rounds in Quebec, Ontario, and the Western Provinces, will put on a screening of their high octane footage on Friday night.

Also on Saturday’s schedule is a vintage bike show and BMX demonstration. Furthermore, the Honda Junior Red Riders will be on site all weekend to provide test rides and riding safety tips to aspiring young motocrossers.
