Press Release

CC Rider/St. Lawrence Radiology Honda Race Update presented by Rockwell Watches

June 27th, 2009

After a much-needed weekend off, the 2009 Lucas Oils AMA Motocross Championship Series returned to action amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Lakewood, Colorado played host to the only night race of the series, and although the evening temperatures cooled off, the action on the track was anything but.

Antonio Balbi looked great in practice after an initial crash prior to the timed portion of his session. He rebounded by putting up a great time and securing his spot on the gate. Unfortunately, this will be an abbreviated recap for Antonio as he crashed very hard in the first turn of moto one and suffered a slight concussion. He would opt out of riding the second moto even though he was much feeling better. It is always a wise decision to play it safe when dealing with the old noggin’. Antonio will be back on track next weekend in hopes of his first top ten of the season.

Ryan Clark: I was riding and feeling great in Colorado, and very much looking forward to a top twenty finish. I posted the 21st quickest time, which awarded me a fairly good starting position on the gate for the motos.

In the first moto I had a great start, rounding the first corner just outside of the top ten. I was passed by a few riders on the opening lap (those young kids kamikaze the first lap!) but settled in around 15th position. On the third lap I made a mistake and jumped off the track, then had a tough time finding a place to re-enter due to the banners that surround the course. I dropped back outside the top twenty for a bit, but slowly clawed back to 18th at the finish.

The second moto was really tough for me, as I started getting a stomachache just before the gate dropped. I tried to ride through it, but my pace was slow and I could not match my first moto result. My moto tally of 18/24 was only good enough for 23rd overall.

April Zastrow was excited to race at Lakewood, one of her favorite tracks on the WMA Circuit. She struggled to get up to speed in practice, but still looked like she had the track obstacles mastered and was hoping to step up in the motos.

Her first moto start was dismal, and while trying to slice through the pack she crashed on a rough downhill. She remounted way back, but slowly moved through the pack and finished 21st. The second moto went a little better, but her start held her back and left her fighting through traffic for the entire moto. Although she bettered her first moto finish, her tally of 21/19 was only good enough for 22nd overall.

We will be back on the track this weekend in Buchanan, MI for round six of the 2009 campaign. The WMA (Women’s Motocross Association) will take a few weeks off before returning at Washougal, but Antonio and myself will be vying for our personal best finishes at the rough and rowdy REDDDD BUUUUUDDDDDDDD!
