BOBRYSHEV WINS IN DUNS 2nd May 2010 - British MX1 Championship Round 3 - Duns, Scotland CAS Honda’s Evgeny Bobryshev took the overall honours for the second time this season in Duns, Scotland, today for round three of the British MX1 Championship following a stunning 3-1-1 performance, while teammate Gareth Swanepoel almost made it a double podium, but concluded an exciting day in fifth overall. In first qualifying Bobryshev finished fourth with Swanepoel in seventh, although it was only Swanepoel who improved in the Superpole lap for sixth place, while Bobryshev ended up 12th on the gate ahead of the day’s racing. In the opening race of the day Swanepoel fired from the line into the lead but soon came under pressure from his teammate and Brad Anderson in the early stages of the 20-minute plus two-lap moto. Anderson took the lead soon after, while closely followed by Bobryshev, who missed a gear on lap three and went down. The Russian racer remounted into sixth place and chased back through the order to finish in third position, with Swanepoel one place behind in fourth. Eager to make amends for his mistake in race one, Bobryshev demonstrated a superb performance in the second moto aboard his CAS Honda CRF450R by passing his teammate, who clinched the holeshot, early on and maintaining his lead to the chequered flag. Swanepoel benefited from set-up changes made between races to gain a good start and put on a strong fight to finish in a comfortable third position behind Stephen Sword at the finish line. In the final moto of the day Bobryshev was on fire, and put on another stunning performance around the Scottish track to take another spectacular win as well as the overall honours of the day. The 22-year-old has extended his British MX1 Championship lead with 188 points, and is now 12 points ahead of Sword. Meanwhile Swanepoel, who was looking sure of a third place overall and a double-podium for the CAS Honda squad, settled into third position early on but made a mistake on lap six to complete the race in ninth, and finished in fifth place overall. The 25-year-old South African is now third in the championship with 159 points. Evgeny Bobryshev #777: 1st Overall “I am so happy after today. Everything was good apart from a little mistake in the first race. I tried to close down on Anderson and I made a mistake when I missed a gear, so I crashed. I fought back to third, which wasn’t so bad. Then the next two races I got to the lead early on and just maintained everything until the finish. It was great to win overall and have another podium. The bike is working well and I would like to say thankyou to my team. I still have the red plate and a better championship lead. We are improving all the time and I am looking forward to the next two World Championship rounds in Portugal and Spain.” Gareth Swanepoel #8: 5th Overall “In the first moto I was riding a bit tight, but got fourth behind Bobryshev. In race two we made a few changes to the bike, which was better, especially as the track was so fast today, and I loosened up a little to get third. In the last race I was in a comfortable third, with maybe seven or eight seconds advantage, when I was trying to close down on Stephen Sword and Bobryshev, who were just ahead. I went down and got back on in maybe tenth place to finish ninth, which was really disappointing. I am frustrated because I could have had a nice consistent day with a podium, but I guess we all want that extra place, although it didn’t work out today, and I let myself down. There are still a lot of points available with five more rounds, so I just need to keep my head down. Lyng is the next British race, which is one of my favourite tracks and hopefully a bit of warm weather will help too, as it was pretty cold out there today. I’m looking forward to the next two World rounds in Portugal and Spain, I just need a whole weekend to be good from first practice onwards. It’s frustrating as my speed is there – it just hasn’t quite come together yet.” Neil Prince: CAS Honda Team Manager “Today has been very successful for CAS Honda. Bobryshev is improving all the time. He put in three strong performances to go 3-1-1, and win his second overall of the season. He rode back through the field to third after a mistake in the first race, earning valuable points and then demonstrated two impressive almost gate-to-flag winning races, which has extended his championship lead. Gareth also had a fairly good day. In the first race he was struggling a little with the set-up of the bike, but we made some adjustments for the second race, which improved things. In the final race he looked sure of finishing third for third overall, but a mistake cost him dearly, as he was closing down on Stephen Sword. Now we head to the next World Championship rounds back-to-back with Portugal and Spain, where we’ll be looking to make another big step forward on our solid results so far.” www.cashonda.com |
