51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha - Anaheim 2 Race Report

Anaheim 2 Supercross Race Report

Livingston, CA. (January 23, 2017)- After rains pelted SoCal for most of the week, the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha Team came into Anaheim expecting a mudder.  Thanks to the crew, the track shaped up with good conditions throughout the day.

Bowers and Mellross took to the track looking to build on the momentum they've built early this season. The 51FIFTY YZ250F's clocked in 10th (Bowers) and 12th (Mellross), giving both riders solid gate picks for the night show.

The #52 and #64 would be pitted against each other in the first heat of the night. Good starts courtesy of their Twisted Development-tuned Yamaha power plant put both 51FIFTY riders up front early as they battled for 4th position in the first race of the night. The TV crews took note of the intense racing, granting each rider solid coverage for fans at home. The 51FIFTY racers would cross the line together with Bowers in 4th and Mellross in 5th.

Both 51FIFTY Yamaha machines lined up for the 250 Main looking to build on their early season momentum. The gates dropped and the 22 riders funneled into the tight first corner, cutting off Mellross' line as Bowers snuck past on the inside. With no where to go, Hayden's front wheel was knocked out from under him and other bikes slammed into him from the back. With the bike battered and the rider bruised, the #64 was forced to retire.

"Each week my heat races have been going really well, and I'm showing these guys that I can run up front," remarked Mellross after the race. "Unfortunately, in the main, we collided and I went down hard on my hand and my bike was pretty bent.  The hand is damaged somewhat but Ill be at Phoenix next weekend."

As the race raged on, it was Bowers flying the flag for the 51FIFTY Yamaha Team. He used his veteran experience to click off consistent laps while battling inside the top 10. Bowers had battles early and late in the race, riding solid throughout to finish in 8th.

"I''m not where I want to be but at least have been building momentum each week," mentioned Bowers. "I worked more on sprints this week and it showed in qualifying and my heat.  In the main, I was practically by myself for much of the race so I just tried to focus on consistent lap times.  8th is better but know I'll keep improving."
