How Did James Stewart Finish 18th? 5

Last weekend there was quite a bit of discussion on the Vital MX Forums regarding James Stewart's final finishing position. The Live Timing system had shown him in 20th spot, and in the race to get results posted, a news outlet or two had used that version of the "final" results. But in the results found on results.amasupercross.com, he was scored as 18th, rather than 20th, which netted him two additional points. Normally no one would notice, except that everyone was trying to figure out the new points gap. Of course, that also left people scratching their heads as to why there was a difference between the two sets of results.

Fast qualifying has its advantages. In this case, two positions in the final standings, and two extra points.

In a case like Jacksonville, where three riders went down on the first lap and were never scored, there's no real way to distinguish who was finished ahead. They don't try to make a determination on which rider cartwheeled the furthest up the track. Actually, at that point the AMA reverts back to the rider's qualifying time to determine the final standings. The Live Timing doesn't take this detail into account. James was the fastest qualifier, Matt Goerke was 19th, and Weston Peick was 20th, which is how they were placed as 18th, 19th, and 20th in the main event.

Here's one other thing to note when watching the Live Timing results. All results are unofficial until 30 minutes after posting by the AMA crew, to allow for protests, problems in post-race tech inspection, or things like a transponder that has fallen off a bike. In that case, they'd revert to the manual scoring sheets to determine a rider's finish.

Hopefully that helps straighten out any confusion.
