I have a YZ 250 with 10 hours on a new coated Wiseco piston. The coating is now worn off. Is this normal? Fist time using a coated piston on a two stroke. Thanks

Pretty normal. The coating is mostly for the break in period.

Thanks. I actually called Wiseco and they said the coating should not wear off. Everyone who uses one says it does wear off. Kinda funny really. Thanks for the reply man.

Could the cylinder be worn out and wearing the piston sooner than should be??

Cylinder is brand new. Talked to a couple other people that run them. They all have the coating wear off too. It's normal, but wiseco says it's not. No biggie. Just gonna run vertex I guess

Some wear is normal, the coating is not a break in type. I would look closely at the piston skirt and see if there is evidence of some dirt coming through the top end. Even a small amount of debris will cause the material to buff down

Most skirt coatings are not impervious to dirt or other effects, but some minor buffing is normal

Sounds like the piston and bore are not matched and you are getting excessive heat/ friction. The costing should not wear off. I run coated wiseco pistons in my RM250 and currently have just over 20 hours and the coating is almost like new. It is not a break in coating. But, on break in, did you coat the piston in premix before kicking it over? Or was it a dry install?

I wonder if they got a bad batch of pistons because I am having the same problem. I have been waiting for over a week for a response after sending pictures in.

Top piston is my last one that had 45 hours on it and ran in a damaged cylinder with bare aluminum showing through the plating in spots.

The second 2 pictures are my current piston after on 13 hours on a fresh replate.

ive never seen a worn piston without wear on the sides. When i see something like this i replace it. 10 hours is about the max id run a piston anyways.

That's mine with 10 hours on it. I put a vertex in and checked it after 5 hours. It's getting eaten up. Got some scratches in it already. I measured the cylinder when I got it back from millineum. It checked good. Not sure if I have a bend rod or something. Maybe the cylinder is tight in a spot or too. Gonna check the clearance with some feeler gauges while it's all torqued down. been riding it anyways runs good. Cylinder is already kinda junk now. So if it blows up who cares. Lol.

Not really. Theres guys that change top ends between motos lol. Yz250 service manual says to replace the piston every 5 races. Thats 5 hours if they mean 30+2 motos.

Quote from the Wiseco site
What is Wiseco ArmorGlide skirt coating?
A.
Wiseco ArmorGlide skirt coating is a dry film lubricant applied to the piston skirt. This coating helps reduce friction, improving performance, and will also help quiet the piston in the cylinder bore. This coating is permanently applied, and is not a break in coating, it is on the piston for the life of the part.

Hey guys. I only have about 5 hours on this piston...I’m thinking I may have to get my cylinder honed... then ideally get another piston and rings.. any thoughts? See pics below.
