I'm about to build up a new set of wheels for my RM. So my question is, rubber rim strips, or duct tape? Pros/Cons.

Sound off!

I went with the.motion pro teflon rim strips they stick in place and are very strong as well as light. Also went with motion pro rim locks which are also very light.

Duct tape here. As above, it's something always on-hand and I replace it each time I change a tyre or tube as part of the inspection process.

Well, I just emailed a buddy of mine who would know, and he said he sees most of the teams using duct tape. So I will go with that!

Duct tape for years, just prep the rim so the tape sticks....

I've gone both routes with no issues, but personally I prefer duct tape.
I do 2 passes round the rim, covering the inner spoke channel with some overlap. No point in taping the lip wear the tyre sits, this just causes the tape to pucker up and can effect tyre fitment and removal.

Cheapo rim strips all the way, never have any issues...plus no shitty duct tape residue.

Two passes of 1" duct tape and the oem rubber strip on top..golden.

I used duct tape for a long time. And then about 5 years ago I just started using the cheapo rim strips. I have noticed exactly zero difference in how often I get flats. But my wheels dont have that nasty duct tape residue and are about a 1lb lighter lol!

No duct tape on my bike. Dirt gets stuck in the glue. If it is on for a while it becomes a glue mess and a tough time to remove. Why would you not want to use a rim band?

You can't tell a pound difference! Or at least nobody I ride with can. Tape vs strip I'm going to do a strip and ask my buddy next time I change his tire if he notices anything different.

Hahaha I know I can't, just saying. There is no difference between the two and the rubber band thingie is way easier to deal with and no sticky residue.

So you duct tape guys. You would build a set of 1300 custom wheels and mess them up with messy duct tape? I get it if you have old pitted hammered rims. But not new wheels.

hate tape, just traps dirt in the back if the spokes, i just use the rubber rim bands.

to each their own

Duct tape makes the spoke nipples stick in.place and really messes up spoke tightening in my experience.

Would you ride a set of 1300 custom wheels in the dirt? Smile

Then you shouldn't lose much sleep about whether the inside of your rim is protected by duct tape or a rim strip.
