Fuel injection vs. carbeurator

Since I haven't found a forum that really answers my question I figured I would just make one. I'm in the market for a used 450f, and there seems to be a controversy over fuel injection vs carb. Some people say fuel injection makes a huge difference, some don't. I don't have the funds to buy a bike post 2010 so I would end up getting the first few year of fuel injection If that's a problem (I'd love to know). Please fill me in on the pros/cons of these systems and which one in your opinion is best. Thanks, have a great daySmile

Buying a moto bike that old will come with some baggage but you will love the FI vs carb. Every aspect the FI is better. No adjustments, no bogs, easy starting. I have a 2010 KX450 I let people ride from time to time and it is still one of the fastest stock engines IMO.

I had a 08 KX450(carbed) and then went to 09 KX450(FI) and the difference was insane. I never rode the 08 again.

So waiting around for a FI bike and paying a little more would be worth it? Is there any problems efi is known for having?

Yes, absolutely!
No, nothing major. Clogged filter maybe, but that's an easy fix. Fuel pumps that quits working and leaky injectors. But that's rare.

I've never ridden a carbed 450 so can't give much insight. But I can tell you how good an FI 450 is. My 15 RMZ450 runs exactly the same whether its -5 or 30 degrees C. Always starts within 3 kicks and I've done 45 hours on the bike and not touched the throttle body once.
Such a change coming from carbed 2 strokes which need a fair bit of attention to keep right.

Definitely worth taking your time and getting the cleanest, lowest hour 450 you can afford. It will work out more cost effective in the long run. Need to take a certain level of care when buying used 4 strokes, as they can become very expensive to put right when things go wrong.

A properly set up carbed bike will perform just as well as FI, assuming you jet it correctly.

I would try to find an '07 CRF450 if you can, probably the best carbed 450 out there imo.

The 05-08 CRF450Rs were excellent bikes. All around, my favorite 450F to date. I will say, however, that when you weight the costs (not just financial) associated with having the carburetor as compared to the EFI, it starts to lose it's prowess.

I went from an 08 CRF450R to an 06 YZ250. I loved that YZ but it gold old getting smoked out of corners by my buddies on their 450s. I bought a 2014 KX450F and haven't looked back. It's very comparable ergonomically and absolutely destroys the 05-08 CRF450R motor. I haven't had so much as a hiccup from the engine. Knock on wood.

Can't go wrong with an 07-08 CRF450R. Its the only bike I regret selling.

Yes, he just said that he couldn't afford a 2010 or newer bike, so that kind of narrows his choices. If he's looking for a bike that is relatively cheap compared to new or 450s, I would say the 2007 CRF 450 is the way to go, if he can't find a newer bike.

FI is definitely the way to go, but I don't think he could afford a reliable one.

What would be an unreliable FI bike? Just so I steer clear from making any bad purchases

Although I do agree that carbs are just as reliable as FI if you know how to jet them. It took me a lot of throttle chops on plugs to figure it out. Nobody has mentioned tip-overs. FI wins on restarting all day long

Find a new leftover 16 rmz 250, great bike 5k. Buying used is a crap shoot. Another 2k you have a new bike.

The only bikes that pops up in my mind that had major problems is the 2008 RMZ-450 and the 2011 KTM 350. Both models should've been fixed trough a recall the mfg made.

Unless you come across a super deal on a very good used condition carbed bike keep saving your money for a FI 4 stroke bike. Take care of it, do the PM work and you will never look back at a carbed bike again !!!!

For me, it is not a big diffrence. Going from yzf 08 250 to kfx 16 250, in terms of throttle response, I didnt feel a big diffrence, if any at all. But it is not that hard to disassemble and clean a carb, while i have no idea how to mess with fi unit....Just saying, older bikes are not that bad...

imo the 07 crf 450 had more raw power than any new FI 450, new bike s easier ride tho

I had a 07 crf full yosh and jetted , great bike. But my 12 kawy mapped, pipe, fuel. Will eat the 07 up, same as my rmz450 2013,. 15 crf, 16.5 Fe 450 no comparison, faster, lighter, crisper.
