I am reading Race Tech's Suspension Bible right now and I think in the future I would like to do some of my own work. At least like changing fork seals, oil, etc. Race Tech has some nice tools available. I don't mind spending the money on good tools and having the right tools to make the job easier. What do you guys suggest? 2009 CRF450 with KYB suspension.

I am thinking:

- fork seal driver
- fork cap wrench
- shock clip tool

Anything else I need like maybe a cartridge rod holding tool, etc? There are a ton of tools!

For now just think about the forks because, at least in the beginning, it's almost easier to just send the shock out
for a fluid change what with the nitrogen charge.

Yeah, driver and wrench. But also it is kind of a messy job. So a big try like one of those concrete mixing tubs comes
in WAY handy. I'll lay down some scrap cardboard or butcher paper, put the pan on that and try to do most of the work over the pan. (My brother would FREAK if I spilled oil in his garage! hahahah)

Okay so there aren't any other specialty tools that you would recommend other than the fork seal driver and the fork cap wrench?

You'll need a fork seal bullet as well so you don't tear the seals when installing them. Other then that you should be good for changing oil and seals on the forks.

Cartridge rod holder is a necessity
Fork seal driver
Soft jaws for your vise
Large drip tray for oil (for putting forks in vise upside down)
I've never used a seal bullet, always used electrical tape.
Top cap wrench
Accurate graduated cylinder

That seems like a good list.

Fork seal driver is all you need. Use tape instead of seal bullet. Use spud wrench (plumbers water pump pliers without teeth). Use small crescent wrench to hold damping rod. And then tools from your tool box.

My fork cap wrench has the rod holder on the other end, works a lot better than a small spanner.
You can get away without the proper tools but having them makes it easier.
I did seals the other day. Tools I used
- fork cap wrench with rod holder
- no vice
- no fork bullet, used the plastic bag the seals came in. Can use tape or condom
- no fork seal driver, cut the old seals in half, sat them between the new seals and dust seal then pushed down on the fork until they seated then slid the fork up, took out the old seals and installed dust seal
- big oil catching container.

I'm just getting set up after a long time off bikes, before hand I just sent my stuff out but now have more free time to do it myself. I plan on getting some specialty tools soon

Step by step guide to a DIY rebuild.

There is a lot more of that type of guide here.

Don't forget the VitalMX discount when ordering; and if you have any questions, we have a tech support line ready to help.
Oh wow cool thanks! Didn't know there was a discount. I will check out those guides and see what tools are used.

Any recommendations as to where I can get a good tray for capturing oil and prevent a mess?

I always used a 5 gallon bucket. I've also used those big aluminum baking pans. You can find them at walmart for just a couple dollars.
