start off with a K&N cold-air intake and a superchip. Then get a turbocharger kit.

Man, they don't make that stuff for dirtbike. For your bike go to fmfracing.com and get an exhaust system. great power gain.

This is why I bought a yz450 as my first bike lol.
I would suggest not putting money into a ttr, its still going to be, well a ttr. Even if you make it faster it will still have the same suspension, id recomend selling it and geting a used 250, the difference will be night and day.

project racer posted the link...I got an '06 TTR to get back on a 2-whlr, after riding quads for years. Wasn't sure if I'd want to stay with a dirtbike and didn't want a major investment. Found a spotless used one for $1600...did the airbox/exhaust/jetting/gearing mods they suggested and tossed the stock tires. It made a huge difference. The 230 is really corked up in stock form.
Even with added stuff like handguards, tailbag, gps mount, bars & grips..I've got less than 2 grand in it and Its been a great woodsbike. I've heard lots of guys say "dont bother...get something else", but the mods alone cost under $150. including tires! Dont bother with a pipe, too much $$ for what little improvement you'll get, but absolutely do the airbox/jetting/gearing mods! 1st gear (stock) is worthless and the throttle reponse improvement is night/day. Stick with the jets (part#) they list, I've talked with guys who tried other jets and wound up using what was suggested. Save yourself the time.
The biggest downfall on this bike is suspension. As I get more aggresive, that is becoming a problem and theres not much you can do about it. Its possible to swap the front end with the YZ inverted setup, but it takes some skill and a $400-500 investment. Thats where I draw the line. I'm looking for a clean WR.
The 230 is no motocrosser, no doubt. But thats not what it was built for.

You don't have to have a race bike to have a good time play riding around the trails and fields. The simpler and easier it is for an entry level rider, the better the chance of them enjoying and actually sticking with the sport of off road motorcycling.

I also have a 230, I put in a k&n air filter, changed the gearing, and a jet kit. I'm getting a pipe soon, but for now its fassst!

Add upside down forks to the front, what kind of pipe is on it? If it is stock, take out the spark arestor plug

I agree about the pipe. I just took the baffle out of the pipe
