I realize fuel injected bikes don't have petcocks for a reason but I want to put one on my crf. The oil level seems to be raising by a little bit (1/8-1/4 in) and the oil smells of gas after sitting for a couple of days. I already change it every 5 hrs at the most and I have tried the proper shut down procedure and warm up and leaving it parked at TDC. I want to be 110% sure my bike is at 100% expecally if it's the motor. I was going to put an inline fuel shut off switch in the middle of my fuel line as it would be acessable there but my concern is the when I switch it off to let the bike run out of gas the fuel pump will be running but not being able to pump as there would be no flow. Would this stress be bad for the fuel pump or will I be fine? Dont tell me I would have all kinds of gas coming out of the exhaust on start up and the bike would run like crap. Tell me if I can put a petcock on my bike and let it idle out of gas and not mess anything up.
Thanks in advance

Why not just clean the leaking injector instead?
I feel like that leak is the issue at hand.

I haven't read anything of a guranteed fix when the injector is cleaned. I'll probably do that tomorrow but I would still like the peace of mind that there is no fuel there to leak.

If your bike is at 100%, then you wouldn't be having an issue. Instead of just slapping a bandaid on it, take the time to fix it right and you'll thank yourself in the long run. I agree with paw paw. And to answer your question, since it is injected, there is no letting it run until the fuel is out of the line, when fuel injected bikes run out of fuel to pump, they stop. And eventually, if you do try this, it would burn up your fuel pump. Eventually.

On top of that, those fuel pumps weren't that reliable anyways. I wouldn't give it another reason to second guess.

Thank you for telling me it won't work lol. looking into cleaning the injector I didn't find much on the interweb. Whats the best way to clean it? Back flush with some cleaner and pressurized air? Or will that not work because of the check valve. A local bike shop had a sonic cleaner machine that I've used on carbs and what not. Would that be worth the $20?

$20 to clean it correctly is cheep. That is much less than having a blown engine.
Look on youtube.com as there are many videos on how to clean the injector.

What about putting a switch in to cut off power to the fuel pump?

Just get the injector cleaned.....That is the only thing that will fix the issue at hand. All others are bandaids.

I cleaned the injector and put in some fresh oil. Started the bike and turned it off to check oil level. I gave it a bit of a sniff and found it still smelled a bit. Does the smell of oil change when it's used? Not so much to a gas smell but just a different smell from in the bottle. I starting to think I'm over thinking the whole thing. The consistany of the old oil isn't super watery. To the point of if I didn't think I had gas in the oil I would't know.

I just went to smell my dad's crf450x and he uses the same oil and his smelled the same as mine. He always run it out of gas before he lets it sit and the petcocks always off. I think I'm an idiot and take things too far lol. Also I forgot to mention I tried the flame test and came up with nothing.
