The topic is my question... I've been in the process of a "budget build" on this 97yz125. I'm about to get my motor back from being rebuilt and I went to finish up everything that I could without having it and noticed my old tank had a huge crack in it.. Everyone I see on eBay is either oversized or from a 96' bike. I don't want an oversized because I ride mx though.

Thank you guys in advance for your knowledge

Go to partzilla.com find the part # for your year bike then go to the other year bike find the part and see if the part numbers match. Same part numbers than they are interchangeable. Good luck

I'm pretty sure they will fit. There wasn't a big change in the bike between those two years

These are the numbers from partzilla..

4ss-24110-00-00

Is that any difference or is that just for their website..

You can't trust part #'s for what you are looking for. if one small detail changes, like the nut in the tank that the shroud bolts to changes from steel to aluminum, you'll get a different #. '96-'01 are basically the same bikes just like '02-'16 are.

I believe they will fit. 96 was navy blue were 97 was a electric blue.

it lists the compatible bikes for the part number right on partzilla, I just went on and it says the first one fits

1997 COMPETITION - YZ250J1 FUEL TANK
1997 YZ125 - YZ125J1 FUEL TANK

and second one fits

1996 COMPETITION - YZ125H1 FUEL TANK
1996 YZ250H1 FUEL TANK

So I would say NO in my experience they are different. When I buy engine parts it sometimes lists like 30 compatible other years and CC's of bikes so I would say this is 99% accurate. Did you look at the pictures in the parts diagram? if the pictures are different than for sure they are different.

I can't see any differences in the parts diagram of the two tanks so maybe plastics are different than engine parts because they have styling and colors to them that are specific to that exact year but for most parts this works.

Aftermarket say 96 to 01. 02 was the first big change. I had a black tank that worked on my 96 and on my 97. Turned them into hurricane Hannah yellow bikes. Check Clarke mfg and google. Even though its oversize it still has the same mounting locations so oem tanks from those years should work. My 2 cents. Shrouds and graphics same 96 to 01 to

The color blue on the '96 was darker than the '97. Thats the difference. It'll fit.
