Which 250 2 stroke to buy

I'm looking at getting an older 250 2 stroke from like around 03-07 to trick out for a hare scramble/trail bike and I was wondering what anyone thought on the bikes I'm pretty unbias on which bike just wondering the pros and cons of each

My choice would be 06 + yz or 05+ rm
The 06 yz's got sss suspension and are basically the same as the 16. Solid build, plenty of of aftermarket support and parts availabilities.
05 RM was about the last year of updates. I had an 07 and loved it but I think my yz is better. Oem parts are apparently getting harder to come by on the RM. Build quality is not up to the yz either

I've got an 08 RM250 and although I love it, I wouldn't recommend one, unless it is in very good condition.

Although OEM parts are available and relatively easy to get (1-2 week wait max), they are getting extremely expensive, to the point where I've now stopped riding my RM because its guna cost a packet to get back to good condition again.

You really can't go wrong with a YZ, all round solid bike, still in production and a good choice of aftermarket parts available for it

I agree with Russ, I love my RM, but I too am getting to the point that I am scared to ride it for fear of having to track down parts. I loved my YZ250 and plan to get another before next season if I can find a good deal. 08-current are the same bike aside from plastic updates which can be had for 250ish dollars.

I sold my 08 so I could help fund my micro sprint car...after a season of that I sold out and found my RM and it was too good of deal to pass up.

What all do you have to replace on your 250 that's going to cost you an arm and a leg?

I need:
Rear brake caliper and bracket, quoted £260
Wiring loom, quoted £95
Kickstart lever, think they are around £160
Gearbox is jumping between 2nd and 3rd again, it was £130 a gear last time I did the box + other misc gear box parts
I've already had to replace the stator, coil, lead, plug cap and carb solenoid assembly to get me to the end of the season which totalled at £265.
It's been fun but man the old RM was needy this year!

I've been there lol. Did my stator and carb slide last season. That alone was over 400$ Canadian

06 YZ and up. Part's will be available long after we are all gone, and you can change color's if the look get's stale, lol. Great motor and suspension. 03-07 KX's are good, 05-07's have strong motor's. CR's are great but certain year's are a pain in the ars to jet. I don't know much about the RM's, other than they turn on a dime. Now is the time to buy.

Previously owned a fully done up 2005 Rm250...GreameBrough suspension....EG295..9ozFww...boysen PowerXwing....black frame....suzuki yellow rims and hubs....the bike was amazing....never a disappointed moment riding it......however i sold it cause i rode a 2014 yz250...and just liked the motor better...the overall handling.....so i did all the same mods to my yz...and its leaves anybody who rides it with a ear to ear grin......that being said...i had a 14' husky TC250...bike and frame is awesome.....steel frame is less harsh in rough conditions....bike was fast....suspension was alittle difficult to get working correctly...but great bike.....i think any modern 2stroke from the last 8-9years will be a blast if set up to your liken....the yz250 is very useable powerband, think it can reward any rider of any skill level.....as long as motor&suspension are dailed for that rider......

the 03-05 KX's out there are starting to go up in price. I just did a 2002 KX250 and enjoy it.

Not sure where your located, but you should buy my yz250. In hanging it up due to the tracks being to far away from me now, I went through this entire bike and made it to out perform the aluminum framed yz250s. I LOVE this bike, but thr time has come to move on. All the details are in the ad
