I told the guy it's a 1986. He swears it's a 91.

It looks like a 91, but the seat does not go up high enough on the tank. The seat and tank looks like the 86.

Agreed - 1986. That looks nothing like a 91. Crabs? I am honestly concerned about the quality of people this planet is producing these days.

As above, it's a 1986, it has a drum brake on the rear to start.... And the advert says new rear tyre..... If the rest of the works as fresh as that.... I'd walk away

Thanks guys. I have zero interest in buying it. I was letting the seller know it's not a 91. Another guy told him it's a 86 as well. He still thinks different though. I know the 86 model well. In the summer of that year I walked into my local dealer and put cash on the counter for one. I was a 16 year old kid and had saved my money from working on my uncles dairy farm. One the proudest moments of my life.

I go on facebook sale/trade site locally and am amazed at the 80's models mx bikes that are being sold as 98-2003 models. I always post the correct dates to the listings; some people genuinely didnt know and thank me, and about 1/4 of the time they tell me i dont know what im talking about and to mind my own business lol.

I sold my 97 rm250 to a guy that blew it up a week later- then listed it on facebook as a 2003 model and wanted $100 more than he bought it from me, running perfectly. I corrected his listing, he told me i was wrong, and i said "i was the one u bought it from, dickhead; i KNOW its a 97". Lol. He quietly deleted it then relisted it a few days later as a 97.

Ok...he reposted it as an 88. Still wrong. The 88 had a rear disc and silver rims.

No, 88s did not have USD forks. 88 YZ's had cartridge conventionals. 89 yz125 had 41mm USD forks (90 did too but tubes were anodized red).

The bike in the pic is almost certainly an 86. 1986-88 are the same generation...the 86 had red shrouds and frame, black painted motor, BASS cable connected to the rear brake...87 similar bike with even worse forks, white frame and shrouds, black painted motor. The 1988 was the first year for rear disc on the YZ125, motor painted silver. White frame and shrouds.

89-92 were an entirely different generation. The only common item...is the engine. 86 thru 93 are all on the same basic design. Case reed, YPVS...most years good midrange and nothing else. We ran a 90 top end in my 93.

Definitely a 1986 model. Worked on one 2 weeks ago for a former coworker. Have the shop manual on CD too...
