Tips for stripped pinch bolt

Edited Date/Time 9/23/2014 3:36pm
2 of the 4 pinch bolts for the front axle are practically rounded off. I'm sure I'm not the first person for this to happen to so I'm wondering if anyone has any tips. Tryed about everything but heat and an extractor socket. I don't think there is enough meat for the extractor to work even if I had one.

You dont know someone with a welder? weld some piece of scrap onto the head and loosen it. make sure you heat and tap lightly on the threads though before doing so.

put the other bolt back in to take 90% of the pressure off the bolt and try it with a pair of vise grips. if that wont move it then go to the ez out. those things should be under what, 15 ft lbs of tq? not much.

forgot of they are drilled all the way thru, if so you can put some pb blaster in from the bottom and let it sit a few hrs.

vise grips did nothing, those bolts are on tight. i just bought the bike friday night and you could tell the kid didnt know much. i wouldnt doubt he cranked them to the max if hes ever touched them. you can actually see some pb blaster pooled up on the rim. gonna try to just spin it out with a hammer and screwdriver when i get home from school tomorrow. thanks for the responses

Be sure there's room to fit a socket on first, but try welding a nut on top of the existing bolt, I'd use as big a nut as possible. Then you can lightly heat the lower portion of the clamp, and see if you can get it to just move a little, you want to avoid stripping the lower threads. Be gentle, it could be seized in there as well. How old is the bike, any chance those have been in there a few years?

You can use a grinder to cut a slit in the top and use a impact driver to get it loose.

That impact driver tool has come in very handy over the years.

Welding seems like the best way, if only I had a welder. Grinding it came to mind also but there's just no room for the size blade I have. If hammering it out doesn't work I'll just have to buy a smaller blade... Or a welder... I wish. Bike is an 01 yz125 basket case.

The cut slot and impact method will work if you also put in the other bolt and tighten it down.

Can you load the bike into your pickup and take it to the local weld shop? It's a 5 minute job with a MIG, put the second bolt back in place, and give it a shot. As for your grinder, get the smallest Zip cut wheel you can find, and good luck.

I think a Dremel with a fiber cut-off wheel would work awesome.

I didn't even think about taking it to a weld shop, it shouldn't be more then 10 bucks I'd think. The bike is actually just the frame and front end right now so It would be super easy just to throw in the bed. Thanks again for all the responses.

Take it off the bike, then the welding shop. Take your tools and try to break it loose while it's hot. Run a tap through when it's done to clean up the threads.

No rust at all. One one the triple gave me the same problem, had to use an air chisel on it which is should have done on the first one. Bikes all apart, time to throw fresh parts at it! Woohoo

1st use a 6 point socket...... thats all I ever use.

2nd a nice sharp chissel and drive it in the loose direction. Once it moves and pressure is off you should be able to take it out he rest by hand.
