So I'm going crazy here, but those awesome 49mm conventional Showa's that were on the 1997 RM125 and RM250................. these were also 1996 forks right? I'm looking to rebuild a pair of 96 RM250 forks and no one offers 96 rebuild kits. Only 97 rebuild kits. WTF? For that matter, they were the same as 1998 right?

Pretty sure they are all the same, meaning 49mm Showa seals, wipers and bushings should all be the same dimensions so even the kits for the new TAC air forks should work.

Thanks guys. That link was interesting. Still not sure why pivot works only sells a 97 kit unless there are some orings of differing sizes or some minute detail. Ive actually had good luck with their stuff so I'll give the 97 rebuild kit a whirl. Even if I pick up some nok seals its tough to beat the price of those bushes

Anyone know about the 96 RMX forks? Mine have the small hex on the cap and a long overhang on the bottom leg.
Just asking about the rm/year compatability. thnx

I got a reply for Pivot Works and there are about 4 orings included in their 1997 fork rebuild kit that won't work for 1996. They didn't talk about 1998, but as suspected the bushes and oil seals/dust seals will work, which obviously are the meat and potatoes of the overhaul.

They are completely different forks than the RM. Old school open cartridges inside the conventional fork made to look like the twin chambers on the RM. More like late'80's/early '90's RM forks. Don't think they are even 49mm, maybe 45-46mm

96 forks are different, and not as good as the 97-98 forks. More underhang (20mm) and internal differences.

My 97 from a few years ago had abroken comp adjuster and crushed damping cup. I ordered an 80 dollar shipping includes set of forks from eBay. When they came in and were disassembled,I found gold valves, resprung, plus new springs at the fork upper assembly also . Those things were the best forks ever!

metal go to race tech site the 97 uses a 4345 then the last 2 numbers would be spring rate so a 434544 would be for the 0.44kg/mm spring. may have to do a google search for the spring rate you want., the 98 forks use a 4347 so my guess is roughly 20 mm longer springs on the 98.

Hi I have a 97 rm 250 and am about to rebuild forks what oil/ oil weight should I use? I weigh about 180 and I ride mostly trails but am known to build some decent sized jumps from time to time so id probably want medium stiffness. Thanks for any advice!

Back in 87' I had a set of conventional CR250 cartridge forks on my Cr125. The forks came off an 87 CR250 and the owner before me removed the original cartridges installed the Mugen cartridge kit. I have never rode anything since That resembled the first few inches of plushness on tiny ripple bumps, roots, rocks etc.

Got a 96 RM125 for free. Trying to figure out the bushings for the fork. I understand the 49mm Showa seals will fit, but what about the bushings? I have bushings out of a 16 Showa Kawi 450 fork, and the guide bushing is damaged and doesn't match up to the Kawis. Any help unless I justbuy OEM?

I just purchased a set of 96 RM250 forks for a my 83 Husky 250 CR. I know the 96 aren't as good as the 97 or 98 but trust me these will be a vast improvement. This project is for a few months down the road but maybe someone can explain the differences on the internals from the 96/97/98 forks. Is the 96 OC or DC? I'm aware that the 96 hang down lower.

Also I'm going to need a custom steerer tube made. Any recommendations on who can make it for me?
