Anyone got any recommendations about improving and becoming faster on a bike? Any key areas I should focus on? I'm an intermediate level rider but I still feel like there's more room for improvement!

Something dumb but actually works is to ride a gear up everywhere. Normally in 2nd in the corner now use 3rd. In 4th on the straight now use 5th. Try to keep the engine in the same RPM as the lower gear. Corners are everything, if you have a turn track wear it out.

I used to take my seat off and practice standing up everywhere.. once you get comfy with that, Take your clutch lever off along with your seat... Looks funny and feels stupid but builds good habits.

Improve your fitness.
At intermediate level, chances are your technique is half decent and you have the basics down. The limiting factor is usually fitness, if your pace drops over the course of a race then there is tons of time to be made from just fitness alone.
This is something I have worked on this year and have seen a noticeable improvement in my results. Get your fitness to a level that allows your to maintain your pace over the entire race, then work on your speed. It's kinda pointless being able to lay down a super fast lap time without being able to do it for 20 minutes.

Also don't ignore your bike. You may think you have a good set up but chances are there is room for improvement. If you can increase your comfort and confidence in your bike then that will improve your speed. Do your research and read through the forums, there is always great info about for every bike

Take off clutch lever? Ha, more like tape your finger to it.

Nope. Learn to ride in the meat of your power all the time. No clutch needed.

i went to Gary Baileys in 1984, he would yell at you and smack your fingers with a stick if your finger wasnt on the clutch, so thats how i learned to ride, about a 100 years later RC and Stew win everything in site without out barely ever touching the clutch, go back and look at photos of them , so yes the new school is no clutch learn where your power is

If you think the clutch is only there to keep the bike in the power you're missing out.

YZfan wants to be a better rider, and by using momentum and not clutching all the time you end up going faster around a track. I'm not talking about having fun and blowing up berms. Try it for a few years, you may learn something.
