You will love that bike! I have an 06 and it is a blast to ride.
Go over everything and enjoy riding it.
Looks clean to me. Congrats!

It definitely needs some work. Gas tank is pretty scratched and the bolt inserts for the shrouds were stripped at one point and reinserted with JB Weld.
I'll probably just find a new gas tank
The back bolt hole for the chain slider on top of the swingarm got stripped out
Small tear in the seat
Needs all new plastics
Top end
Tires
Levers
And I'll probably go back to stock exhaust
That's just what I saw right off the bat. I'm going to take it out for a couple laps tomorrow and then get started on stripping it down to just the frame an motor. That way I can super clean everything and check all the bearings and hard to see things. I'll post the rebuild on here with pics and questions as they come up. When it's done I'll post summary and recap all in one post. Smile

Sweet, not sure how I missed it when I looked at the bike but I guess the previous owner busted the case after throwing a chain. It's been repaired but I'm going to have to go ahead and get a new side case. That's a pretty solid financial addition to what I was expecting to put into this bike, haha. Gotta love surprises! Dry At least it'll allow me to get a good look at the bottom end.

If it doesn't leak or cause an issue, why replace the case?

Just concerned that it may be a weak spot, but ya I've been thinking about it and I may just keep a good eye on it and leave it for now.

Finally got a chance to do a little tear down. It's awfully hard to find time between work and a girlfriend at home that is upset that I bought a bike instead of an engagement ring. In my defense I have that part covered already but I can't tell her that so I just let her vent Wink . Anyways, starting off.

The massive Q-Stealth exhaust. If anyone wants to buy it from me, let me know. Looks like 4-stroke from behind, haha.

A couple little trouble areas:
Have to fix the stripped bolt hole on the swing arm.

Cracked air box, no big deal really.

Just some more of the tear down process.

Steel braided brake lines but they'll need some adjusting. They felt weaker than my stock 03 yz125 brakes and those even had the old under the forks routing.

Last one has a question with it. Does anyone know if that's what the fuel fitting is supposed to look like on the carb?

Fuel fitting looks fine to me.

That bike needs a LOT of elbow grease!

+1 on fuel fitting. looks like normal.

i'd tear that thing down to the frame and soda blast most of that stuff. will save you a lot of time and come out looking new.

Ya she's getting torn down completely. I work at a track so I get access to some pretty solid discounts on parts. It doesn't look like that repair on the case is leaking but if I can save enough money here and there I'll go ahead and replace it for peace of mind. I can basically do a whole top and bottom end rebuild for half price so it almost seems silly not to. I bought it for $2k and my rebuild budget is going to be $1500-2000. I think a like new bike with some extras for hopefully under $4000 is pretty nice! Smile

BTW, if anyone is looking for an FMF Q-Stealth silencer, Cycra hand guards, and Rekluse Z-start Pro full clutch kit with cover, let me know. I'll work out a deal with you. The clutch works just fine but this bike was used for woods riding and I'm not crazy about the auto clutch setup. I ride with a finger on the clutch a lot of the time, and it just doesn't offer the same feel I prefer in the corners.

DBerg - I would be tempted to keep the Rekluse. Would be interesting to see how it work in moto. Get some 2006+ YZ250 Forks.

great bikes, I had several yz 250"s, I would inspect trans gears and replace any suspect gears, my 05 & 08 yz's needed new trannys after each season. the jetting is also on the lean side, sand or cool temps would make bikes ping/ detonate, I think 08 went to slightly richer needle taper, that helped but would still detonate in deep sand, 50/50 race gas will fix. like bd said 06 forks are a major upgrade, other than that, great bikes

How painfully slow it's going. This is as far as I have gotten so far after over a month now :/. We have a race this weekend so I probably won't get anymore time to work on it until after the weekend.

So I had a hectic weekend with my first time taking one of the lead roles in hosting a motocross race. We had three practice days and a night race that saw the largest turnout of the series by almost 25%! Durning all the madness, I still managed an hour or so to tear down the bike a little more. I'm basically done with that and will start deep cleaning everything now, and after that I will begin the engine rebuild!
It's rough seeing the track looking so good with my bike looking torn down. Either way I wouldn't have been able to race, so I didn't really miss out because of the rebuild, but it's still rough wanting to race when you know you can't.

Here's where I'm at right now.

Cycle Ranch MX has been a little busy lately so this project has gone nowhere so far. After doing a little more cleaning I uncovered a huge crack, so I'll be replacing the cylinder in addition to the left side engine case. No telling what the inside of this motor looks like. It's funny because the bike I bought before this one was a total steal and this one is a turd so I guess it all balances out, haha. Good thing I get a nice deal on parts.

Anyone have any idea how that happens? I was talking about it with one of the guys I work with, and our guess is the previous owner tried to take the motor out before and maybe took a pry bar to it, or he just dropped the cylinder when doing a top end. Can't see that happening in a regular riding situation, but it's scary to think what the inside of this motor looks like

strange place to break, powervalve area, would not think it would be under heavy stress loads, maybe dropped cly when removed. I have had a few weird things happen to my 08 yz 250 2 stroke. developed a massive air leak, creating a run away lean engine condition, soon as I touched throttle it revved to the moon. checked all the usual suspects, crank seals, head, base, reed gaskets, intake manifold ect. could not find the air leak, swapped carbs with known good running bike, no deal. gave bike to good mechanic friend of mine, he called me up & said, you wont believe what I found, I came to his house, stater side engine case was cracked in a perfect circle all the way around the bearing circumference! never seen anything like it, I raced the bike the week before when it still had the air leak, could barely ride it, did not blow up, but would have if I kept riding it. complete teardown, weld case, good as new.

Yeah, either dropped the cylinder or was tapping on it with a hammer to get it loose. Or maybe dropped the bike on the right side and the pipe got smashed in there and pushed up against it.

Weird about your engine case crack/hole. I did the exact same thing in the exact same place on the same bike. I was dumbfounded because it chunked off on my first couple laps on a sand track where I have never seen a single stone. I wonder if its a weak spot. I JB welded it, and it's fine for years now.

I would calling the guy you bought it from and going down to beat the hell out of him. This happened to me before i bought a 2007 rm 125 for 1,000 in 2012 and then found out the oil plug was stripped and a ton of other problems

Haha, that's a little much. A stripped drain bolt certainly isn't worth getting into a rage about either.
I plan on keeping this bike until it's vintage so it's whatever. I'll buy and sell others, really leaning towards KTM, but I'm a YZ man at heart and want to eventually build this into the custom bike I've always wanted. It's definitely getting more expensive this early on in the project than I originally planned though. The cylinder isn't leaking though so I may swap it out later on after I get everything put together.

Yeah little much but somewhat justified I mean when your spending thousands of dollars on something you want to be told the things that are wrong with it. Oh by the way it was the drain bolt it was the case it was cracked because he tightened the drain bolt to much. But I got it fixed by Jr cycle shop and its stronger than it was stock and it looks very good.
