Are works bikes from the 90's or even 80's as good as a stock bike is today? I forget how many years ago it was, but Seb Tortelli thought that the RC 500's from the 80's would have been competitive at the time he made the comment. This, of course, if there was an open class.

11/4/2009 7:51 AM I rode my stock '84 CR125 the other day and the motor was every bit as fast as modern bikes but was seriously lacking in the suspension department.

11/4/2009 10:07 AM The biggest advantage of a "WORKS BIKE" is being adjustable to fit the racer. If you want a different footpegs mounting point they have it, if you want a closer gear ratio you can get it same with almost anything down to the length, size or shape of the clutch lever.
Of course when it comes to suspension you can't hardly beat the Factory stuff ( the works forks cost more than 3 production bikes) Sometimes tho it can be almost more of a bother because if the racer doesn't know what he wants or likes or can't express himself to the mechanics he can send many hours trying to find his setup. |

Ronnie Lechiens 1985 RC125 was flat out rank. Battery powered powervalve and so on. As great as these YZ125's have been in the last ten years, my moneys on Lechiens RC. Tweek with the suspension a bit and rock & roll. You can be assured that bike flew from a power point of view. Just my opinion is all.

11/6/2009 12:38 PM I'm sure there are some works bikes from the past that probably have some points about them that would be comparable or better than what is currently offered. However considering so few major changes on production bikes since 1989 (aluminum frames and 4 strokes are the only two I can think of until the 2010 YZ450 came along) we've gotten refinement after refinement to the point that things are pretty good when set up for rider preferences. And like someone said above ,works bikes were tailored to the rider. Some to the point that most anyone else considered them to be unrideable.
