Is it normal for new pads to drag quite a bit?
Just replaced the front and they are dragging quite a bit, like if I spin the wheel by hand, it will make maybe 1-2 roatations before stopping.

I made sure the Pistons were fully back before installing new pads, the pumped up the lever 4-5 times to bring up to the disc.

Will this gradually disappear as I bed them in, or do I have other issues to look for?

Is it scrapping of actually dragging? Telling us it spins 1~2 revolutions after you spin it means nothing. No idea how hard you spun the tire

Did you remove excess fluid from the master cylinder after installing the new pads?
If not then it may have too much fluid and not allowing the caliber to retract the pistons.
Your new pads should not drag as much as you have stated if the pistons are pulling back and if your wheel bearings are in good condition.

Wheel bearings are all good. With the caliper removed wheel spins freely with the same kind of force when I spin it, so it's definitely dragging.

Will try remove some fluid, do I need to take it directly out of the master cylinder, or just from bleed screw like normal?

It might be time to rebuild your calipers.

Tried bleeding some fluid out but made no difference.

Will replace all fluid tomorrow and see if that helps, probably due for replacing anyway.
Have inspected pistons and they are clean and not sticking or anything, move in and out without any obvious sticking.

Could it be pads are too thick? Would have assumed they usually adjust on there own but stuck for ideas now.

Are the brake pins the pads sit on smooth and not notched at all? Might want to clean them up a bit with a scotch brite pad, and put a little grease on them. Then see if that helps, it might.

Cleaned the pins up, bled and replaced fluid, but still the same issue.
Put the old pads back in, and everything works fine when they are in, so am thinking it has to be that the pads are a tiny bit too thick.

Just thinking maybe I should do the bedding in and see where I am after that. They are just a consistent gentle rub on the rotor the whole way round, so maybe after a a few stops they might settle in and be okay.

What brand are the pads? I've seen cheaper stuff come a little too fat

Your brake pads need to "seat" first. Ride it and see if that helps

Brake pad pins you already cleaned, but did you clean and grease the sliders? What about the caliper Pistons?

Yes to all the above.

Think I am the bottom of the problem, the pads are just too thick.
If I put one of the old pads on the fixed side of caliper, and a new pad on piston side, there is a tiny bit of drag, but when I put the new pads in both sides there's lot of drag, which makes me think pads are a couple of mm thicker than they should be.

So, can I file them down, would that cause any negative effects?

What brand are they?
Buy a set of proper ones instead, cheap health insurance Wink

Is your caliper floating freely on the pins?

The caliper pistons tend to oxidize/corrode a bit when they are exposed due to thin pads. If you press them all the way back in for the thicker pads, they arent going to slide across the seals as freely.

Ive had the problem a few times and cleaning the pistons and replacing the seals usually does the trick
