Hey guys......when I'm changing the oil in my 2012 KXF450.....the manual states that without a filter change I should be putting about 34.5 oz of oil back in the bike after a total drain. I do this and the oil isn't even up to the sight glass. I always have to add about 1.5 - 2oz of oil to get it up to the middle-upper middle of the sight glass.

Does your bike do the same? Just thought it was a little odd for what the book says and what I'm seeing.

Go by the manual. The oil systen still has oil in it. If you add additional oil you will end up with to much oil in motor and could blow seals. Atleast thats whar i was told about kawis.

Does the level look different after you start the bike and let it cool? Sometimes the oils just sits in a weird compartment and needs to be moved around to get the proper sight glass level.

You must also factor in the oil that stays in your measuring cup, not all of it is drained.

Yeah I did notice after I put in the exact amount the book calls for , even after I fire her back up for about a minute and then let it sit for a good 5 minutes.....I barely see it in the window. Once I add about 1oz +.....fire it up again , let it set 5 min , it will be about 1/3rd the way up the window. So you guys think I'll be safe just using the exact amount of about 34.5 - 35 oz and just leave it at that?

I've always put in recommended oil, and then topped off as needed. When you take your car to the shop for an oil change, the specs may say 4.6qts, but nearly every car requires an extra 0.1-0.2 to reach the "full" mark

I hear ya. The same with every bike I've ever owned I think too. I didn't want to take a chance and blow any seals or anything so I'll probably just stick with the 35oz without the filter change.....do the same amount with the filter and add just a little if it's needed.

Loving this Kawi right now.....what a great bike!

I’ve never trusted that oil sight, to me it’s just to check if you have oil, not what the oil height is. My girlfriend brought home a 1000ml graduated cylinder from her job and I used it to measure out my oil change to the exact milliliter from the manual. Fill it up, oil level was above the sight, ran the bike and let it sit, oil level below the sight…..

I don’t even measure out my oil changes anymore. I just fill until I see the oil is about half way up the sight, then add 2-3 more glugs from the bottle and then I’m done. I can’t see how having a couple ounces over will do any damage. I’ve done it and it just pukes the oil out the overflow.

The only time I ever heard of too much oil was when I sold a CR125 to a guy. He calls me up after an oil change and says the bike won’t start. When I asked him how much he put in and he says “I filled it up.”

I always go by what the service manual says
I never go by the sight glass
My bike always looks like it is low on oil (even people tell me) but I know it is correct as per the manual
Team Green has told me similar
Have never had an issue

i run 1200-1300cc when I dont change the filter and run 1500cc with i do change the filter. team green told me years back to run that much, plus it i allows the clutch to be more in the oil.

After you put the new oil in, make sure you run the bike then check the window. I had the same problem. I always had to add a little bit extra then what the manual said. I don't get people that say they don't trust the window. It's there for a reason. As long as your bike is level and you run it with new oil for a minute then let it rest for 2 minutes it's 100% accurate. I'm pretty sure it would say to do that in the manual too.
