DIY Race Tech Gold Valves....

Ok First off Sorry, because I know this thread has probably been done before but I didnt feel like searching for one. So... Has anyone on here ever done the Gold Valves themselves succesfully. I have an 07 YZ250 I like how the stock suspension is now but I want pillows for suspension ha. That being said I always do my own fork seals and motor work and everything else I feel as if I could takle this job and save some money. Any information or stories is appreciated. Thanks

A reputable suspension shop can usually give you the same results for less $$. Gold Valve kits themselves are kinda pricey. We do fork and shock revalves daily for less that retail price of a GOLD VALVE kit. I am not saying they aren't good and if you enjoy doing your own work then that is prob the best route for you. Keep in mind you are more than likely going to have to do it several times to get the exact feel you want so that means going through lots of shop rags, contact cleaner and fork oil.

Do you mean installing a set of race tech GV's or porting the stock valve? I've seen and done some stock porting and they work very similar to the gold valve.

I mean buying the GV KITS and doing them my self.

I did Gold Valves front and rear on my 09 KX450. Wasn't really a big deal, just be cautious when removing the peening from around the nut that holds the valves on. The forks are really easy and I just carefully filed the one off the shock shaft. I had good experiences with mine, they felt good and it was pretty cool to do it myself. I did change some settings over time, but you get used to it.

Well sure you can do them if you can do the seal job. But again you can save some serious cash by just porting the stock stuff.

Cygnus, I have an 09 yz450f. The suspension is done on it, but I'm getting ready to change the fluids on my forks & was thinking about getting GVs or porting my own Pistons while their apart. What's the process? Is there a thread around here with a step by step DIY? Also, will porting the pistons give the forks a better feel with the valving I have?

It's possible that a gold valve will have a different seal than the stock valve resulting in less stiction. So the porting may only be half of the equation.

The trick to the stiction is cross hatching the fork tubes..
