I purchased my 06 CRF 450 in December and ride 2-3 times a month, including my races. I have always noticed sort of a fine line of dirt that develops across the top of the steering stem and down the back. I'd always attributed it to spilled gas or overflow somehow, but upon closer inspection there appears to be a crack. I filed the back of the stem down a little bit just to see if it was a surface flaw in the casting, but it came back on my ride today. It isn't getting any worse, but at the same time if the stem failed landing from a 4th gear jump, it would probably be lights out.
I am also on my second set of steering head bearings since December, which makes me wonder if it could be related. The bearings tend to get rusty prematurely, even though I grease them and do not pressure wash the bike.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? Is it repairable? I can pick up another frame for the bike on ebay for $200-250 and that is an option too. Just wanted some opinions if possible, thanks in advance!!
