Bench grinder and a punch. No messing around with an awkward tool like a chain breaker.

Running the chain with too much tension and no lubricant will break it pretty quickly and easily....

X2 the above.
Bench grinder or cut off wheel on an air tool and a punch.

If what you're looking for is the best for the money. Don't spend any money if you have the above tools. If you don't have the tools or for some reason want to break chains while away from shop, then buy a tool.

Buy a tire instead if you can.

I know this is an old thread. But I have a question. I bought the Motion Pro chain breaker. Works great, But i broke the pin on it.. But when i go and try and order a new one there are 3 different sizes.. 2mm, 3mm, and 4mm. which size is the one that came with the unit?

Thanks.

Buy the 2mm pin. It'll work for all 520 chain.

The last 2 chains I bought on ebay were already cut to length. If you know how many links you need, no chain breaker needed.

example.... search ebay for "520x114 o-ring"

Good luck with that 42 miles from electricity. Some of us ride more than the two local MX tracks.

I've been using this Tusk chain breaker for years and years without issue, and I do a lot of bike restores and work so I use it more often than most people.

If you are breaking chain breaker tools, you likely are not using them correctly. I spent 20 years using a grinder and punch like others have stated, now that I have the correct tool I wonder why I did that for 20 years!

I don't know what brand this is...but my old man's had it since the mid 70s and it was passed on to me. It's worked flawlessly for 40 years.

Try finding one that says "USA" on it today.

It's banged around in different toolboxes for decades and only gets used a couple times a year but it works great.

I've found that this type sucks. It pushes the pin through the near side but because it does not support the back of the far side the pin cannot break free and it bends the plate out. A real hassle.

I've been using the standard Motion Pro one for years and it works great.

You just need to push both pins on the link you're wasting anyway.

I push the first one about ½ or ¾ of the way, then pop the other loose. Just takes a second and then the link falls right out.

That makes sense. I was doing it wrong!

This type is IMO the best available. It's tool less and works great. I currently have the Motion Pro simply because someone borrowed my old one and never brought it back. The day I needed one the MP was all my dealer had in stock. It works well but I hate having to use 3 tools to do the job of one.

I have been using one like the bottom one pictured for over 40 years without a single failure. Now it was made by a different company, but it works the same way. I have never had an issue with bending plates or with pushing the pins out of any chain. The key is to be sure the tool is tightened firmly against the link before you start pushing the pin.
