Advice needed - 15' CRF450

I was riding last weekend and the engine started making a weird noise. I brought it into the shop and they tore down the engine and found the oil pump had gone and basically taken my engine and transmission with it. The bill to fix it is 6k which is out of the question.

My question is what to do with it now. The engine is completely disassembled so I basically have a rolling chassis. I have a few parts on it I can probably sell (Rocket exhaust, Rekluse Torqdrive but I haven't looked at close enough to see if there was any damage to it, hotcams but need to look closer at that as well). I have an 03' CR250 I've been slowly restoring and wondering if any suspension parts are interchangeable since I need to rebuild both front and rear suspension on it. Is there anything else of value I can get out of this so it's not a total loss?

Any advice is appreciated!

Right, that was the price for buying new parts and reassembling. I think even 4k is too much to spend. I just had to split the case 6 months ago from a broken chain which was $2500 so I'd rather not dump any more into it.

Suspension may fit, but be prepared for a revalve and lots of tuning. I put modern (2008) CRF suspension on a friend's '96 CR and the performance was pretty poor at first. Two stroke chassis, weight, and engine characteristics are just much different than a modern 450/250. Once we tuned it, it was better than the '96 components. Also, the large rear shock reservoir may not fit on the CR (not sure).

In my experience, parting out a bike is a bit of a hassle and takes 6 months +. eBay can be great but can also be a major headache. Taking the time to create the dozens of listings, potential buyer disputes, shipping issues, . Plus eBay & paypal fees add up quick (13% on total selling + shipping price).

If you are trying to get rid of it, I would put it up for sale locally as a "mechanic special". Lots of people, myself included, are like a moth to a flame with these projects. Honestly, these ads are much more attractive than the dozens of used four strokes in the $4k price range. I would offer you $1500 the way it is and I feel I would be getting a pretty good deal. I would expect you could get anywhere from $1500 - $2000 for it. Be prepared for lots of low ball offers, just ignore those.

Another thing going for you is two-stroke fanatics are chomping at the bit to find a nice roller for a CR 500/250/125 build. It's also the right time of the year to start a winter project.

Alternatively, there is a brand new complete motor on eBay for $3,700.

You should be able to sell the entire roller pretty easily. Especially with all the 500 conversions out there. I like the Honda chassis, and that suspension can be tuned well. I'm sure you will get people interested in it.

I would part it out. May seem like a pain but that frame will fetch $500, wheels $200, suspension $800, swingarm etc.

If i could spare dough for an AF500 project, I'd buy it. The air forks would do well on 2t imo. It could be a sick bike for open class. Good luck.

What exactly did they find? If you lost an oil pump which I have yet to see fail in any Honda CRF 250/450 2002-Present it would have zero to do with the tranny. Pretty much would have to snap a rod and saw the cases in half to damage the tranny from that type of failure. Seen plenty of that on Kawis but just not a typical thing for Honda. Transmission and clutch do not rely on the oil pump to feed them. What damage did they find in the crank/top end? What damage to the tranny? Very curious.......
