I am helping a buddy tune his new to him 200. It is fat from idle to mid range, dropping the needle helped quite a bit, but I know a leaner needle will clean it up to where it needs to be. Altitude is 0-1000'. What is the best choice for this bike?

Try the NOZH needle in the 3rd clip from the top. Pretty good starting point. If it's too rich off idle you might consider dropping the pilot jet. 45 or 42. Air screw adjustments are often overlooked. I would start out by leaning the pilot. That sorta sounds like your issue to me. Good luck.

I'll assume the engine is in good working order, and that he still has the stock 39mm carb with a 6.0 slide no notched slide. I recommend that you start out with an r1370 DKA needle in the #3 clip with a 42 pilot and a 175 main jet, with the air screw at 1.5 turns out. That 6.0 slide really needs to be cut to a 7.0 as well in order to fully take advantage of any jetting changes. I would really stay away for the NOZx/N1Ex series needles. The starting diameter/ straight section is just to short combined with a very rich 1st taper. When you also add in the rich slide, it just makes for a rough running bike down low.

Digger, thanks for the help. Yes, the engine is fresh, as in put it together Saturday fresh. It had broken roller guides for the power valve control segment so we freshened it up while we were at it. With the NOZH needle it currently has, it is just too rich from idle to just over 1/4 throttle. After that it rips. The Honda needle is on the way so we will see how it does. Ever had any luck with the Suzuki needles in the 200 with a 39mm carb? It really helped my 03 CR after I installed the PWK.

I have used an NECH needle in a 200, with good results, but that was on a bike with a 36mm air striker carb with a #7 slide. I was going to suggest the NECH needle, but I thought it might be too flat off the bottom and into the middle with the 39mm carb on the 200. I bet it would run fairly clean though. To get the bike to really run clean, Imo, iyou are going to need a leaner 7.0 or 7.5 slide. Check to verify that the slide you currently have is in fact a #6. Another good needle to try would be a Kawasaki N3YH needle, which would use the same pilot and main as the Suzuki NECH needle.

Have you tried that NECH needle with a #8 slide in your 03 CR ? It really perks up the throttle response down low.
