I have a 98 KX60, and it was running great up until my roommate got on it. She swore she knew how to ride since her brothers do, but turns out she didn't. Big suprise..lol. Well anyways, now it won't start and has barely any compression when I cover the spark plug hole with my thumb. I pulled the top end and the piston has alot of carbon buildup and has light scratches down the side. The cylinder doesn't look bad other than some light scratching on the intake side (top clean side seems to be the exhaust side) and carbon buildup around the spark plug. There's no play in the connecting rod bearings thankfully, so the bottom end seems to be in good condition as well. Got a few pics of the piston, so does it just need new rings? I ordered a set of Namura rings today on Ebay because it said they'll fit the oem piston, so I should have them in a week give or take. And can I use liquid gasket maker on the lower cylinder gasket, or should I go ahead and get a real one like in a kit?
Check the ring end gap in at least three places in the cylinder before installing them.
Decarbon the piston.
Do a compression check after you get it back together and then check it regularly to see if it's time for more work.
Next time replace the piston and rings.

And by looking at the buildup, am I running it too lean or too rich? Seems like I have to adjust the carb every time I ride it, so it's never perfectly set. However the top end being worn out probably had alot to do with that, so hopefully it'll run better after this.

I can't even count how many hours I put on the bike riding nearly everyday last year and every weekend the year before that. And like I said, I got it second hand and it was beat, so I have no idea when the motor was last rebuilt since it hadn't been ridden in 4-5 years before I bought it. But there's zero play in the big end bearing and there's no rub marks on the crank, so the bottom end is strong and took that long for the rings to finally wear out, so I guess it's a true test of how much this little thing can really take! Lol
