I hopped on my KX250 the other day and pressed and lifted my toes trying to secure neutral. Felt no click in either direction. I grabbed the shift lever with my hand and pulled and pushed and still no click. The bike has sat in the basement (closed and dry) for awhile but I would not have expected this. Ideas? Really wanting to take it out.

Thanks!

If you have not been changing the oil frequently in the past, depending on how old the bike is, the shift drum might be stuck in the bearings from the grit/goo of haggered out oil. I bought an old Yamaha that was doing what you described. It would not shift, stuck in first gear, then it would occaisonally shift.

The bike was not worth splitting the cases , so I drained the oil, filled the gearbox with mineral spirits and rode it slowly, shifting as I could, then drained it, repeated .Did this 6-7 times and got back decent shifting . Filled with oil, rode it, and changed the oil every time there after.

It shifted good for me and continued to shift good for the next owner . Old 360MX Yamaha, probably had the original oil in it when I got it from '74. Just my experience, yours may vary.

It sounds like the spring may have poped off of the ratchet arm.....or the arm cracked. I have seen both. Drain the oil and pull the clutch side cover.

I'm sure he meant inside the clutch cover vs inside the cases.
