I have a CR125. Dont race but to ride MX and trails, some pay mountains with hundreds of miles of trails. At the mountain and track its usually half and half 2T vs. 4T and I have found a decent deal on a 2010 CRF250. Im a honda guy.

So I called around to my local MX guys shop. Hes not a new bike dealer, just has a race shop, a practice track and his son races. I was floored when he told me what he got to rebuild a 4T! If not blown up $1200 and if blown up $2200 plus any machine work involved.

Now, I did just do a top end in my 125 and I think if I had to I could split the cases and do a fully on it but I have watched a full rebuild on a 250f on youtube and I really dont think I could pull it off. So many parts and variances with the valve train.

I just dont know if its worth it. the 2010 is $3000, Id hate to ride it a week and it pop. Im sure it has been raced somewhere down the line and the owner traded for it and has no idea about hours and whether its had any work.

Is that a stay away bike?

I disagree on the tope end part. To do a typical top end is about $200-$250 and not a whole lot more work than a 2 stroke on a 250f. A few extra steps and all the wiring is a pain but not as bad as you think it is. Now if you need a head rebuild, etc that would be more but piston/gaskets & timing chain isn't bad. Splitting cases isn't really a whole lot more work than a 2-stroke either..........

Is the $200 to $250 with you doing the labor? that seems doable to me.

Sorry, yes doing it yourself. I have done two stroke motors for years & XR/KLX type engines and was a bit apprehensive when I first cracked a 250f but ended up being about the same with a few extra steps. You will need some different tools so be prepared. The right stuff makes it much easier. I imagine the shop cost is higher as these damn injected bikes have more wire than a power station! Not difficult just more time...........

I've rebuilt many 4 strokes and the prices aren't that bad unless you have a catastrophic failure grenading the cases or you're paying someone else to do it.

Im not sure on the pricing of a 4 stroke rebuild, but rebuilding the top end is cake. Valve shims are easy once you understand how to use a feeler gauge. Replacing the valves is easy, you just need a valve spring compressor and pay attention to how you took them apart. Bottom end is basically the same thing in a 4 stroke as a 2 stroke. You can drop a grand on a 2 stroke rebuild if you have a major failure.

Here is the dirty secret they don't want you to know about. I would rebuild my 125 every 10-15 hours at 100 bucks a pop. I'll rebuild my 450 every 30-40 at 200 a top end.... What's cheaper?

If you are skilled enough to split the cases on a 2T for a complete rebuild you are skilled enough do to do a 4T. Don't be afraid to learn new things. Sure, you might need help the first time or two or have your nose stuck in the service manual the entire time, but it's just repetition.

Here's the stuff you probably won't ever do yourself 1) head machining 2) valve seats 3) cranks etc. It's the exact same stuff you wouldn't tackle on a 2T

If you buy the 250F, ride it and maintain it properly. Don't ever let it get to the point to where it might grenade.

If you don't think you can afford it, don't buy it. Be honest with yourself. If that 250F grenades can you afford to fix it or is it going to get parked or sold as a parts bike?

But everyone with a 125 for sale on Craig's list says it has a new topend with only 10 hours on it.. So you must just be changing them out for fun Laughing

another dirty secret is if you get in tight with a local shop and they start hooking you up real good. A top end for a 125 is like 45 bucks!!!

3000 seems a bit high for a 2010 unless it mint. Have you considered a CR250 2 stroke ? Top end rebuild on the 4 stroke is not to bad at all.

Nah, I have a 2t, just want a 4. I don't know what about prices in my part of the country. I see all these bikes supposedly being bought for peanuts all over but that's not the case here. They are all $500 higher than what I see. The bike is not mint.

I'm sorry but no one is doing a top end on a 4 stroke for $200. You can put a piston in it for $200 but that isn't doing a top end. At some point, you need new valves, seats, springs, cam chain guides etc.. None of those are cheap and when they fail, 2k will be what you are looking at.

I was talking basic top end to basic top end..... obviously you'll be into valves and seats after 100 hours or so. Maybe 400-500 OTD if you deliver a head to the shop stripped down

Year and model are you getting $15 valves for? XR75?

You are making it sound like the average modern 4 strokes titanium valves are cheap.

Jesus Christ, I'm glad I don't live where you are. My shops will rebuild the top end for $450, which includes all the parts and labor.

Of course if you wait for your 4 stroke to throw a rod before maintaining it you'll have to pay up. If you compare that cost to that of a 2 stroke piston you end up with the conclusion that 2 strokes are cheaper to maintain. If you basic/preventative maintenance on both bikes, the maintenance costs are pretty similar. Some guys did the math on TT a few years ago. Kept spreadsheets of maintenance and costs for both 250 2t and 4t. Over the course of a season, the costs per hour of use were similar.

Umm..the same!
$100 every 15 hrs-two stroke.
$200 every 30 hrs- four stroke.
4 strokes are quit a bit more expensive for a basic topend rebuild...

$200 usually just buys the piston, rings, wrist pin, small end bearing and circlips on a 450, not to mention $20-40-cam chain and $15-30-gasket kit. Most 4t pistons don't come with gaskets unless you buy a kit which usually brings the price of a 450 topend kit up in the $250-280 range for the whole piston kit and cam chain.
And rebuild time on a 450 for the average guy is about two to three hours...if not longer.

But.. Your average 250 two stroke gets rebuilt every 30 -40 hrs also at about $190 and takes roughly an hour and a half for the average guy.

So..what's cheaper
9/7/2016 1:01pm Edited Date/Time 9/7/2016 1:17pm

And costs considerably more..
A clean part is a happy part!

Trust me..it takes longer!!
