This weekend I am picking an 04 Kx250, guy says he just rebuilt the motor but the rest of the bike needs some work. So Ima use it as a project bike and go through the whole thing and make it all brand new again! What are some ideas that I can do it make it unique without spending a ton of dough. Trying to keep it the whole cost to a minimum but, I will spend the nessicary money to fix whatever needs to be done as far as bearings, suspension, and what not.

Why does everyone rebuild their motors then sell? Not to sound paranoid, but if you don't know the guy well, ask for some proof of the rebuild, receipts for parts, photos etc..

A rebuilt motor is more desirable to a buyer rather than an engine which needs rebuilding after buying.

However be wary of people who claim an engine rebuild has been performed... The only way you'll know for sure is to tear it down and see for yourself. My mate and I bought a KX125 2004 a few weeks ago - the buyer was nice as pie and very honest. he claimed the engine had been rebuilt, and low and behold when we stripped it down all the seals and gaskets were perished. Thankfully the buyer reimbursed us the cost of the parts (£150), but still. Don't believe everything you're told.

For sure, I work at a shop so I have all the tools to do whatever I need to do to it and I will for sure be looking at it.

Does any one know if the newer style kxf shrouds(13-15) style bolt up like the older kxf shrouds(08 and older) to the kx frame? And does the newer style front number plate and fender bolt right up?

It has been done before, however I read that you need to weld a tab onto the frame to make the shrouds line up, and if you want to go all out on the rear also then you may need the '13 airbox, subframe and seat, if you want to upgrade the rear to the new gen plastics. The front end (fender/plate) bolts on without any mods apparently.

I have seen it done before just never knew how difficult it was! But thanks for the info!

Sounds like the KXF fender is actually a little short, in the sense that it doesn't seal off the airbox and leaves a gap
... you know how the KX rear fender is sticking up a lot? The KXF kinda droops down...

Here's the shroud brackets:

If you're going to get shrouds, 06-08 work the best, they line up with the tank and that's the biggest thing. 09-11 are off, and 12-13 are even more difficult to fit.

Nice work! Looks like a solid bike.

There are a bunch of methods to get the rust off that nice PC pipe. CLR, navel jelly, aluminum wheel cleaner, ect. I am about to do the same on a rusty PC pipe....going to try CLR first.

I am going to try a few methods to try and get the rust off! I really want to keep the PC works pipe since PC does not offer it anymore for a 2004. So I am hoping I can save it and just throw a new 304 silencer on it!

Quick update;

-Forks and shock are apart, getting serviced and should be back together by Wednesday evening.
-Linkage, swing arm, axles and all other moving parts are gonna be washed tomorrow and greased and be ready to be put back on.
-Front rim, spokes, and hub are being cleaned and shined up. The back wheel spokes are being cut out tomorrow and will be replaced this week and the rim and hub will be cleaned and shinned up. Both while be recieving new tires as well.
-Frame, subframe, air box, gas tank, and engine cleaned and ready to go back in the frame.

Hoping by the end of the week, motor will be back in the frame, along with all the suspension piece (linkage and all) are back on the bike by the end of the week.

How it looks as of Friday night.. Still got some work to do, but can't complain so far.. It's so far perfect with everything, but I left the motor alone and just cleaned up the cases and what not without taking it all apart because it was running cherry before I framed it.

Kinda surprised this was asked. I purchased my 04 purposely for the steel frame and 48mm Kayaba combo for $1000. I built it how I wanted it, did the work myself so I can trust it, and saved a butt load of dough in the process. I am going to be super frank, I really think people purchase over their ability and think they will be better for doing so. A more powerful engine will not make you faster; a Gibson LP will not make you a better guitar play; Ping golf clubs will not make you a better golfer.
